The dustwrapper is rubbed with tape marks to both sides, discolouring and fading to spine, has some wear to the edges and corners, with some rips and large chips to the edges. The red boards are clean with minimal bumping to the edges, with bright lettering to the spine. A couple of small marks to top and fore-edge page edges. The binding is firm. The pages are clean and crease free. This book has 159 pages. All in all a nice example of this book.

Although widely varying viewpoints are represented, all the contributors are very interested in the events in volved in the formatian of siliceaus structures and their function. Data presented deal with these questions in a variety of plant and animal systems, and at levels ranging from the evolutionary to the biochemical and ultrastructural. Innovations in electron microscopy and, indeed, the advent of electron microscopy itself, have stimulated many ultra structural studies of silica deposition, work which has deepened and widened the interest in those organisms which routinely produce 'glassy skeletons. ' The question of how silicon participates in biological systems in volves a spectrum of fields that indudes the chemistry of silicon per se, its biogeochemistry, biochemistry, ecology, and so forth. In this book, however, attention is focused up on the biological aspects of silicon and siliceous structures, with emphasis on the evolutian, phylogeny, morphology, and distribution of siliceaus structures, on the cellular as peets of silica deposition, and on the physiological and biochemical roles of silicon. This volume represents the first compilatian of such data. Because such a variety of subjects and fields are covered, the reader will have to glean for himself some of the comparative aspects of the data.

Each of the two typescripts is on one side of a piece of A4 paper. One is signed in type at end 'T. B.S.' and the other (which appears to be mimeographed) carries what is presumably Simpson's signature at head in the manuscript note: 'From T. B. SIMPSON | 11/6/49.' Text of each clear and complete, on creased and aged paper. Apart from the typed signature to the one copy, and the fact that one copy has square brackets and the other curved, the two texts are identical. The poem consists of six four-line stanzas, with the first reading: 'Between the Palace and the Hill | Behold the ranks of archers stand! | They are not standing straight or still | And yet the spectacle is grand.' The fifth stanza consists of some 'fragments of dialogue': '"Have you got heather-beetle still?" | "This year the plovers' eggs were late." | "What do you think of Herbert's Bill?" | "My God! I've dropped my dental plate." In the last stanza 'the Monarch' is said to know 'That he is guarded by those bows | Which few can hold and fewer draw.'.
