The maps are derived from a number of government departments and reflect the interests and concerns at the time they were compiled. The maps incorporated in this selection are drawn primarily from contemporary World War II sources, and many of them have been annotated by the commanders or operational staff who used them. This additional information adds greatly to their value as historical documents. Michael Sharpe is a freelance aviation writer who has written for a number of publications, including The Military Yearbook. He is the author of Great Air Disasters and Expert Guide: Attack & Interceptor Jets.
