Il cofanetto risulta rotto nella parte inferiore. Il primo volume di Civitates Orbis Terrarum fu pubblicato a Colonia nel 1572. L'opera, curata da Georg Braun e illustrata principalmente da Franz Hogenberg, conteneva 546 incisioni - tra mappe e vedute dall'alto - dedicate alle città di tutto il mondo. L'abate coloniese Braun trasse ispirazione dall'opera di Abraham Ortelius Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1570), che si può considerare il primo vero atlante mai pubblicato. Il Civitates, concepito come una sorta di appendice al Theatrum, intendeva nondimeno raggiungere un pubblico più vasto. Franz Hogenberg, l'incisore di gran parte del Theatrum, non fu peraltro l'unico artista coinvolto nella realizzazione di Civitates, cui collaborarono svariati disegnatori, incisori e cartografi; su tutti Georg (Joris) Hoefnagel di Anversa, la cui opera fu proseguita dal figlio Jakob. Fu lui a condurre le "ricerche sul campo" nelle città spagnole e italiane, intervenendo anche sui contributi degli altri collaboratori, mentre Braun si preoccupò di inserire nelle incisioni delle figure in costume locale. Le immagini riprodotte in questa edizione ci permettono di conoscere il volto delle città del tardo XVI secolo, da Cuzco, in Messico, a Calicut, in India. Per ciascuna delle 80 città incluse in questa generosa selezione dal Civitates, Michael Swift e Angus Konstam hanno analizzato le mappe cinquecentesche, evidenziando l'incredibile quantità di informazioni in esse rinvenibili, nonché il cammino storico delle varie città e le differenze rispetto al loro volto odierno. Viele verschiedene Künstler waren an dem Werk beteiligt, darunter der bedeutende niederländische Miniaturenmaler Joris (Georg) Hoefnagel.
