Surtees novel Handley Cross and uses them as a vehicle for a series of narrative illustrations in colour. The illustrations are large colour plates tipped to card inserts. .

Jorrocks was Surtees' timeless creation, his vulgarity and cheer still make the reader chuckle today. The red cloth cover is much bashed about. There is wear to all edges, corners and seams. The covers are marked, stained, scuffed. The covers and the spine are stoic. Inside, the contents are foxed throughout. Here and there the binding is cracked, but the pages are secure and sure. Internally, some light offsetting to eps, an edition limited to just 230 copies, (xxvi), [1], 2-332, 28 plates, of which 8 are coloured, printed by William Blackwood and Sons, teg remainder uncut. Surtees, was an author whose books ran counter to the currents of his age in their lack of idealism, absence of sentimentality, and almost wilful flouting of conventional moralism. His leading male characters were coarse or shady; his leading ladies dashing and far from virtuous; his outlook on society satiric to the point of cynicism. See ODNB.
