Beautiful and exceptionally attractive copy of the rare revised Swedish edition of one of the finest and most important illustrated works on the fishes of Scandinavia. Although the title bears the name of Fredrik Adam Smitt (1839-1904), the work is in fact the culmination of a monumental undertaking begun more than half a century earlier by three of Sweden's foremost zoologists: Bengt Fredrik Fries (1799-1839), Carl Ulrik Ekström (1781-1858), and Carl Jakob Sundevall (1801-1875).The original edition, published between 1836 and 1857, was intended as a comprehensive survey of the fish inhabiting the Scandinavian seas and inland waters. The project, however, suffered a serious setback with the premature death of Bengt Fredrik Fries in 1839 and remained unfinished for many years. The present edition was thoroughly revised, completed, and brought up to date by the eminent ichthyologist Fredrik Adam Smitt, whose systematic revisions secured the work's lasting scientific value.Each species is described in detail, with information on its morphology, distribution, habits, and economic importance, making the work an indispensable reference for both zoologists and naturalists. The plates show about 70 varieties, coloured with delicate shading and parts highlighted with gum arabic. The text is the work of 3 eminent Swedish zoologists Fries (1799-1831), Ekstrom (1781-1858) and Sundevall (1801-1875). The present copy includes all 63 plates, the complete main text and preliminaries and the complete text of the "Bihang". Somewhat browned, but otherwise in very good condition, with some water stains in the gutter margin of a few quires (not affecting the text or plates), 1 quire spotted and a few very minor marginal tears or restorations.
