USADO / GEBRAUCHT / USED. "In 1977, American photographers Larry Sultan (1946-2009) and Mike Mandel (born 1950) published a book of photographs titled Evidence. The book was the culmination of a two-year search through the archives of 77 government agencies, educational institutions and corporations, including General Atomic Company, Jet Propulsion Laboratories, the San Jose Police Department and the United States Department of the Interior. The original pictures were made as objective records of activities unfamiliar to the lay public: the scenes of crimes, aeronautical engineering tests, industrial experiments and other subjects. Sifting through some two million images, Mandel and Sultan assembled a careful sequence of 59 pictures. The book was thoughtfully designed to depict the photographs in terms of their "documentary" origins, unaccompanied by identifying captions. Faced with a world of mysterious events and unfathomable activities, the reader is confronted with only the sequential narrative imagery of the book and thus must actively participate in creating its meaning Following a revised edition of the book in 2003 and a 2017 reprint--both of which sold out quickly and have become highly collectible--Evidence is back in print nearly 50 years after its initial publication. This new, definitive edition features revelatory new scans--many made from the original negatives--which greatly enhance the eerie objectivity conveyed by the book's title. In many cases, the original negatives revealed that crops had been made to the image by the agencies; the complete images are restored here. The jacketless, library-style binding of the original 1977 edition is also restored, further underscoring its impersonal documentlike character and its canonical status" [Photobook+Photography+Art]. ** 10% DESCUENTO/RABATT/DISCOUNT PRIMAVERA * 43,20 (reduced from 48,00) **.

Not simply a textual complement to the exhibition but also an unusual combine of art works, this book is much more than just a documentation of an exhibition, it's an exhibition in book form. In spite of its classical design and hardcover binding, it is an artists' book with a truly unusual use of texts and reprints. The book will also feature sections with visual reminders and references for all of the 4th berlin biennial activities including Checkpoint Charley, Gagosian Gallery in Berlin, and the columns presented by the bb4 in Zitty magazine." -- publisher's statement. Light blue-gray endpapers. Epilogue by Robert F. Forth. Illustrated with 59 full page b/w duotone photographs, with list of government agencies, educational institutions and corporations these photographs have been selected from. Intriguing group of Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan's 1977 uncaptioned images. The publication gained legendary status since its original publication (Parr/Badger 220/221, Vol. II). "By definition these found images are records and by implication they are cultural artifacts," write the artists in their statement about the exhibition [at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art]. "This is not a compilation of photographs that define any specific place in time but rather a poetic exploration upon the restructuring of imagery. It is difficult to pinpoint the subject matter of these pictures: human contact with mechanical apparatus, bits and pieces of industrial environments that depict a world separate from our everyday experience where the process of technology is tested and recorded, tension and explosion, and above all, a carefully designed invitation to participate in the closure of the meaning of the images." (Museum Press release, 1977). A copy of this press release is laid in along with a photo-illustrated double page invitation for exhibition). Binding and slipcase with minor wear along edges. Very light sunning of endpapers along edges. Binding in overall near fine, laid in ephemera lightly sunned along edges, photographs in fine condition.

In den WarenkorbFirstÂedition of this groundbreaking collection of 59 evidentiary photographs selected from diverse archives, documenting crime scenes, scientific experiments, industrial tests, and natural disasters. Slim oblong quarto, original dark blue cloth gilt. Signed by both authors on the title page, "Mike Mandel 6-21-77" and by Larry Sultan. Afterword by Robert F. Forth. In fine condition. With the advent of âart photographyâ in the 1960s and 70s came a somewhat pretentious insistence by the artistic community that only âartistsâ could create valuable photographs. When Evidence appeared, it shifted our appreciation of the photograph toward something more than a purely artistic expression, and forever designated âfound imagesâ and âcandid shotsâ as acceptable in the photographic arts. In the afterword to this collection, art professor Robert Forth warns (tongue in cheek) that to interpret evidence correctly, we must âunderpin and surround the evident with more circumstantial materials,â that archeology, for example, âis nothing more than sociology without live people around to fill in the gaps between the remains.â Roth 101, Parr & Badger; Photobook.
