A lavishly illustrated copy of Thomas Moore's classic chivalric romance, 'Lalla Rookh'. An illustrated edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with bevelled edges and gilt detailing to the boards and spine. All edges gilt. Binder's label to the rear paste down of Leighton, Son and Hodge. Illustrated with sixty-nine illustrations from original drawings by John Tenniel, engraved by the Brothers Dalziel, and five ornamental pages of Persian design, one of which is in colour, by T. Sulman, engraved by H. N. Woods. Collated, complete. Lalla Rookh is an Oriental chivalric romance by Irish poet Thomas Moore, centering on the fictional daughter of the seventeenth-century Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart though a little faded, more so to the spine. Shelf wear to the corners of the boards and to the head and tail of the spine, causing small losses. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot. Good. book.

Possibly viewed from a hot air balloon above Kennington, depicts the Thames from the Houses of Parliament to St. Katherine's Dock. North of the river landmarks include Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park Corner, the Clock Tower of Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, St. Paul's Cathedral, Monument and the Tower of London, with Regent's Park, Hampstead and Highgate. On the south side of the Thames are Lambeth Palace, Waterloo Station, St. George's Circus and Elephant & Castle. Wood cut engraving, original folds. Minor wear to margins, faint overall foxing, and a stain to upper left quadrant. The Illustrated London News (1842-1971) was the first illustrated news magazine. It reported on British and world events including news of war, art, science, disaster etc. Although the publication ceased in 2003, the company exists today as Illustrated London News Ltd., a publishing, content and digital agency.

Original antique large woodcut after an print by Halman. This impressive sheet shows Edinburgh from the bird's eye view. The grid pattern of New Town appears in the foreground. The Castle is on the hill centre right, and the Royal Mile can be traced leading down from it to the Holyrood Palace. The hill at the top left is Arthur's Seat. Thomas Sulman was a student and later an engraver for Dante Gabriel Rossetti. He became a specialist in using hot air balloons to produce birds eye views of cities including London, Oxford, Edinburgh, Glasgow and New York. In excellent condition. Uncoloured woodcut engraving. Good condition. Panorama has folds and the back has been strengthened. There are repairs to tears in the margins. Presented in handmade wooden frame.

Thomas Sulman (c.1834 - 1900) was an English architectural draftsman. Sulman studied at The Working Men's College between 1854 and 1858, where he was a student of, and later an engraver for, Dante Gabriel Rossetti. He became a specialist in using hot air balloons to produce birds-eye views of cities including London, Oxford, Edinburgh, Glasgow and New York City. These views, as hand-coloured engravings produced with the help of London engraver Robert Loudan Sr., were featured in The Illustrated London News from the 1860s, and were sometimes produced to a fold-out six foot length.

Published in 1863 as a supplement to The Illustrated London News. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 42.5 x 131 cm. A highly detailed panorama of London as seen from a hot air balloon. The city is viewed from a point above Kensington, showing the Thames from the Houses of Parliament to St Katherine Docks in the year before the Thames Embankment bill was passed, the legislation that led to the construction of the Victoria and Albert Embankments. On the north side of the Thames, we see Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park Corner, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, St Paul's Cathedral, the Monument, and the Tower of London, with Regent's Park, Hampstead, and Highgate visible in the distance. On the south side of the Thames, there are Lambeth Palace, Bethlem Royal Hospital (now the Imperial War Museum), Waterloo Station, St George's Circus, and Elephant and Castle. Thomas Sulman (c. 1834-1900) was a specialist in creating cityscapes from a bird's-eye perspective using balloons, including views of London, Oxford, Glasgow, and New York.
