In den WarenkorbFirst edition. Boards with dust jacket. Boards have a full-color front-to-back wraparound illustration which is repeated on the dust jacket. Book a little leaning, otherwise near fine copy in near fine dust jacket, in particularly nice condition as the binding is very fragile. A parody of the 1930s bestselling swashbuckler Antho…ny Adverse by Hervey Allen (William Hervey Allen, Jr.). There is a funny, obviously completely fictitious revelation of Hardly Alum's "true" identity on the back inside flap of the dust jacket. New York Public Library catalogue identifies the author as Edward Dean Sullivan. Sullivan wrote a number of books published by the Vanguard Press on Chicago crime and other topics. Adolf Dehn, here doing straightforward comic illustration, became a member of the American Abstract Artists.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Chicago Surrenders' is a gripping exposé of the lawlessness and systemic corruption that gripped the city of Chicago during the height of the Prohibition era. Written by seasoned crime reporter Edward Dean Sullivan, this work serves as a stark investigation into the underworld, detailing the… chilling dominance of organized crime syndicates and the notorious figures who led them. The book provides an unflinching look at the rise of Al Capone and the violent struggles for control over the city's illicit trades, from bootlegging to gambling. Sullivan explores how the lines between law enforcement, politics, and the gangland were often blurred, leading to a state of near-total municipal collapse. Through vivid reportage and a deep understanding of the era's criminal landscape, 'Chicago Surrenders' captures a pivotal moment in American history where the rule of law was challenged by the sheer power of the mob. This work remains an essential historical document for readers interested in true crime, urban history, and the complex social dynamics of early 20th-century America. It offers a front-row seat to the era's most infamous criminal activities and the social climate that allowed them to flourish. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
