Plants experience various environmental stresses and result in both general and specific effects on its growth and development. Tolerance or susceptibility to these stresses is complex phenomenon and plants exhibit a variety of responses to abiotic stresses viz., drought, temperature, salt, floods, oxidative stress which are depicted by symptomatic and quantitative changes in growth and morphology. The challenge is to identify those responses that provide the most meaningful phenotypic information, to design sampling methods suitable for use in the field. Phenotyping involves measurement of observable attributes that reflect the biological functioning of gene variants (alleles) as affected by the environment. Although many studies reporting several physiological and molecular traits with the relevance to field applicability were reported, many of them are not simple, reliable and researcher friendly due to complicate procedures and high genotype and environment interaction. This book elaborates various methods that can contribute to phenotyping of crop plants for various physiological and biochemical traits. They involve analysing methods for field-based assessment of these traits as well as laboratory - based analyses of tissue constituents in samples obtained from field-grown plants. Index to genera and families. From the Preface Increasing worldwide concern over the present state of biodiversity and conservation has now given a new lease of life to exploratory studies. Neglected in the past our knowledge about the floristic and faunistic diversity of our country is far from complete. This is especially true of Andhra Pradesh one of the largest State of India. In spite of the fact that it is floristically one of the richest areas in India a complete inventory of the flora of Andhra Pradesh is still lacking. Further compilation of regional flora should provide the basic material for the envisaged Flora of India. A first compilation of the Flora of Andhra Pradesh was prepared by Pullaiah et al. (1997) which deals with 2500 species of angiosperms. However during further study of herbarium specimens and perusal of literature it has been observed that about 272 taxa need to be included in Flora of Andhra Pradesh. Therefore in order to make the flora of Andhra Pradesh more comprehensive it was considered worthwhile to publish the taxonomic account of all additional taxa in the form of a supplement. This book would be of use to botanists foresters environmentalists the students of botany and research workers interested in the flora of the Andhra Pradesh. Traditionally plants were identified and described with emphasis on reproductive characters like flowers and fruits. This method works well with herbs which are annual thus lacking distinguishing characters like the bark and easily enabling collection and preservation of the whole plant. However use of reproductive characters for day to day identification by field biologists amateur naturalists and people who do not necessarily posses special botanical knowledge is difficult and necessary. An urgent need of a preparation of field identification handbook for the mangrove forests which are having high ecological and economic value and recognized as most threatened ecosystems is felt. The blades of the axial flow fans force air to move parallel to the shaft about which the blades rotate. In other words, the flow is axially in and axially out, linearly, hence their name. The design priorities in an axial fan revolve around the design of the propeller that creates the pressure difference and hence the suction force that retains the flow across the fan. The main components that need to be studied in the designing of the propeller include the number of blades and the design of each blade. Their applications include propellers in aircraft, helicopters, hovercraft, ships and hydrofoils. They are also used in wind tunnels and cooling towers. Due to its unique landscape, the Aravallis harbor diverse ecosystems and habitats. Proper documentation of the flora and spatial characterization of the landscape is essential for sustainable development. The authors have documented the flowering plants of Aravallis of Rajasthan based on field surveys and literature. Quantitative assessment of floristic diversity was carried out using phytosociological data. Vegetation types of the Aravallis were delineated using Indian remote sensing data and field inventory data to understand the explicit spatial extent and distribution. This study also characterized species diversity and biological richness at the landscape level using satellite remote sensing and geographic information system.
