Early printing retaining the original color pictorial wraparound dust jacket design, depicting the three Earp brothers and a fallen gunman on the front panel. An unusual variant in the complicated printing history of Lake's classic biographical treatment of Wyatt Earp. Bound in heavy pebbled green cloth with gilt titles to spine and cover and marshal's badge emblem stamped in gilt. The original-design dust jacket is unpriced, with a small red device depicting a bald eagle on the cover of a book occupying the position where the trade price normally appears on the front flap. Strikingly, this example contains only the photographic frontispiece and lacks the complement of photographs found in other early and later issues. Prior owner's inkstamp to front pastedown identifies Wayne G. Raysor as â2ND LT. , INF. -RES. , â who subsequently served during WWII. The substantial cloth, heavy boards and paper stock, together with Raysor's early military ownership stamp, are consistent with prewar production, while the unpriced jacket and omission of the photographic plates suggest a special-distribution or book-club issue. Soundly bound, with the gutter toning to endpapers frequently encountered in books of this period. Dust jacket heavily worn, with a large approximately 2" chip at crown of spine and smaller chips and nicks along edges. Flaps had separated along the folds and have been reattached with minimal, judicious fibered-paper tape mends. Jacket spine considerably sunned, with corresponding sun fading to the cloth exposed by the large crown chip. An unusual and apparently undocumented issue, retaining the original early jacket design and with physical and provenance evidence suggesting a prewar date. VG/G.…

The book purports to be a biography of Wyatt Earp, recorded at the instigation of his third wife. Many writers and other men who knew Earp personally held him to be utterly unlike the character portrayed by Lake. This book omits all the shady incidents of his life and does everything possible to glorify him.
