Tight and lovely first edition of this historical fiction about the founding of the northwest Illinois utopian community of Bishop Hill, founded by Swedish immigrants in the 1840s. Choice author signature and inscription in black ink on front flyleaf: "wish best wishes for / E. Clifford Toren -- / Stuart David Engstrand / Feb 15, 1940." Affixed at top of front pastedown is a heavy card stock 32mo trifold announcement, featuring Engstrand's portrait on the front and a printed invitation to a lecture by Engstrand about Bishop Hill, same date as this inscription, to be given at the Swedish-founded institution of North Park College in Chicago. An uncommon title, seldom found signed.
