Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Poor. First Edition. Quarto (approximately 13 inches by 12.5 inches). ix, [1], 241, [1] pages. Profusely illustrated. Chronology of Events in the Life of John F. Kennedy. Participants. Credits. Photo Credits. DJ worn, torn, with tears (some repaired with tape), and chips. Name of previous owner written in ink on fep. This is a Columbia Records Legacy Collection Book. Goddard Lieberson (April 5, 1911 - May 29, 1977) was the president of Columbia Records from 1956 to 1971, and again from 1973 to 1975. He became president of the Recording Industry Association of America in 1964. He was also a composer, and studied with George Frederick McKay, at the University of Washington, Seattle. Lieberson was noted for his personal elegance, taste and style, and was renowned as a wit, bon vivant and international traveler, whose circle of friends and acquaintances including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Richard Rogers, W. Somerset Maugham, Noël Coward and John Gielgud. Lieberson began working for the CBS group of labels in 1938 - the same year the company was acquired by the CBS broadcasting empire - and he began his career at Columbia as an A&R Manager. Before becoming president of the company, Foreword by Lyndon B. Johnson. This book was written in the words of "Alistair Cooke, W. Averell Harriman, Mrs. Rose Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy, Pierre Salinger, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., Adlai E. Stevenson, and others." Derived from a Kirkus review: The love of family and friends and intimate associates informs a volume about JFK in such a manner that this is the way we too will remember him. It is presented with high competence and style and portrays JFK from childhood on. The last day at Dallas is not shown; Tom Wicker's report covers it. President Johnson's words preface the volume, James MacGregor Burns' close it. Between come the testimonials of many others, articles on major events, issues, crises, family reminiscence, and JFK's own words to form a living biography. The photographs reveal him unforgettably, in stress and repose, trial and triumph. The quality here rises to that of the man. Among the participants/contributors are: McGeorge Bundy, Bruce Clarke, Alistair Cooke, William O. Douglas, Lord Harlech, Averell Harriman, John Hersey, Herman Kahn, Robert Kennedy, Rose Kennedy, Evelyn Lincoln, William Manchester, Mary McGrory, Richard Nixon, David Powers, Walt Rostow, Richard Rovere, Dean rusk, Pierre Salinger, Arthur Schlesinger, Eunice Shiver, Hugh Sidey, Theodore Sorensen, Adlai Stevenson, Tad Szulc, Tom Wicker, and Jerome Wiesner. Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. 224 pages. Illustrations. Documents. Index. Illustrated endpapers. Introduction by Robert S. McNamara. Introduction by Harold Macmillan. DJ is worn, torn, soiled, chipped and price clipped. "A .classic in its laconic, spare, compelling evocation by a participant of the shifting moods and maneuvers of the most dangerous moment in human history."-Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. During the thirteen days in October 1962 when the United States confronted the Soviet Union over its installation of missiles in Cuba, few people shared the behind-the-scenes story as it is told here by the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy. In this unique account, he describes each of the participants during the sometimes hour-to-hour negotiations, with particular attention to the actions and views of his brother, President John F. Kennedy. Thirteen Days: A Memoir of the Cuban Missile Crisis is Robert F. Kennedy's account of the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. The book was released in 1969, a year after his assassination. Thirteen Days describes the meetings held by the Executive Committee (ExComm), the team assembled by US President John F. Kennedy to handle the tense situation that developed between the United States and the Soviet Union following the discovery of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, 90 miles (140 km) from Florida. Robert Kennedy, who was the US Attorney General at the time, describes his brother John's leadership style during the crisis as involved, but not controlling. Robert Kennedy viewed the military leaders on the council sympathetically, and recognized that their lifelong concentration on war was difficult to set aside. The book was used as the basis for the 1974 television play The Missiles of October. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated]. Cecil Stoughton (Photograph) (illustrator).…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. 251, [7] pages. Illustrations. Index. DJ has some wear and soiling and areas of discoloration. Inscribed by author on the fep to Arthur Ellis, longtime chief photographer at the Washington Post. The inscription reads For Arthur Ellis One hell of a photographer & my friend for a long, long time Ben Bradlee. Arthur Ellis was a Washington Post staff photographer for nearly a half-century. Mr. Ellis began his career at The Post in 1930. Over the years, he not only took many memorable pictures, but also served as photo editor of this paper in the early 1950s, and was the author of feature stories and book reviews. He had a 47-year career that was interrupted by service in the Army during World War II. At his retirement, he was The Post's chief photographer. Benjamin Crowninshield Bradlee (August 26, 1921 - October 21, 2014) was an American journalist who served as managing editor, then as executive editor of The Washington Post, from 1965 to 1991. He became a public figure when the Post joined The New York Times in publishing the Pentagon Papers and gave the go-ahead for the paper's extensive coverage of the Watergate scandal. After his retirement, Bradlee continued to be associated with the Post, holding the position of Vice President at-large until his death. In retirement, Bradlee was an advocate for education and the study of history, including his role as a trustee on the boards of several major educational, historical, and archaeological research institutions. Ben Bradlee first came to know John Kennedy well when they were Washington neighbors in 1958. They remained good friends and off-the-record confidants until President Kennedy's death. They also had a more professional relationship governed by Bradlee's job covering the capital for Newsweek. Bradlee and his wife Tony participated in the parties at the White House and in more private moments when the president and Jacqueline were relaxing with friends. With Kennedy's knowledge, Bradlee kept notes of their intimate conversations. These records are the basis for this behind-the-scenes record of the human side of the JFK presidency. For the first time, all the conflicting elements of Kennedy's personality are seen at the closest possible range. Here was a politician of the South Boston stripe who also was at home among the WASP intellectuals he brought into government, who loved the sick old tiger who was his father and yet would not be dominated by him, who understood his brothers' every quirk and strength, admired women, and had few illusions about human nature but nursed dreams all the same. From one of America's most distinguished journalists, the story of his time with Jack Kennedy as both reporter and friend. Conversations with Kennedy is legendary reporter and executive Benjamin C. Bradlee's account of his intimate dialogues with JFK - a man he counted as a confidante and friend. Beginning in 1958, when Kennedy was a US senator running for president, and continuing until 1963, the year that Kennedy died, Bradlee shared a close professional and personal relationship with the charismatic politician. Both men were war veterans, idealists, and up-and-coming American leaders, and they shared values that drove their friendship. Kennedy was a politician equally at home with the bruising intellects he appointed to government posts and his working-class constituents. He respected his complicated father, understood his brothers, admired women, and had few illusions about human nature. Bradlee's eye for detail reveals JFK's views on everything from Communism to conservatism to freedom of the press. From parties at the White House to weekends at Palm Beach to JFK's enduring influence on Bradlee's own life, this is an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the man behind a myth, written by a giant of American journalism. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated]. Cecil Stoughton (front of jacket photograph) and M (illustrator).…

Vintage borderless press photograph of President Lyndon B. Johnson on November 22, 1963, just after being sworn in-and just after John F. Kennedy had been shot in Dallas-with his wife and Jackie Kennedy still in shock at his side. Mimeo snipe and the stamp of the San Francisco Examiner reference library dated November 23, 1963, are both on the verso. A remarkable artifact, physically tied to one of the most powerful moments in US history. Johnson was sworn in aboard Air Force One at Dallas Love Field, just over an hour after John F. Kennedy's death was announced at Parkland Memorial Hospital. From the archive of the PIX Agency, an American photo house that acted as an intermediary between emigre photographers (as well as those still living in Europe) and the American magazine and newspaper market between 1935-1969. 11 x 8 inches.
