In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first impression, of "one of the scarcest books of Antarctic exploration" (Rosove). Doorly served as a junior officer on Morning, the relief ship to Scott's Discovery of the National Antarctic Expedition (1901-4). He was awarded the Polar Medal for his work freeing the Discovery from her ice-bound anchorage. James Gerald Stokely Doorly (1880-1956) was born in Trinidad and educated at the Thames Nautical Training College for the mercantile marine. During the First World War, Doorly commanded New Zealand troop transports and Admiralty colliers. He moved to Melbourne in 1925, where he joined the Port Phillip Sea Pilot Service. Doorly is described as a gifted musician and singer: Edgar Evans declared that "without Doorly, the men of the Morning and Discovery would have been hard-pushed to survive the disappointments and long voyages of the Antarctic expedition" (Australian National Biography). His book, "a very interesting, pleasant, and readable firsthand account records the discovery of Scott Island and the first landing on Beaufort Island, and personal impressions of the Southern party upon their return" (ibid.). Morning also carried home an ill-tempered Shackleton after Scott sent him back to England on health grounds. Doorly's work "has taken on quite an aura for many collectors" (Taurus). Rosove 96.A1; Taurus 142. Octavo. Frontispiece, 15 plates from sketches and photographs, 4 leaves of music scores, folding map at end. Original blue cloth, spine and front board lettered and ruled in pale yellow, yellow and black penguin vignette on front cover, lower edge uncut. Cloth rubbed and mottled, light marks, a few plates neatly reinserted, occasional finger soiling, pen marks on rear free endpaper, tear to map stub repaired with tissue paper on verso (tear not affecting printed area), internally fresh. A good copy.
