Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'As I Knew Them' offers a compelling firsthand account of the corridors of power in American politics during a transformative era. Written by veteran journalist and editor Henry L. Stoddard, this work provides an intimate look at the United States Presidents and political titans he encountered over several decades of reporting. From the post-Civil War leadership of Ulysses S. Grant to the administration of Calvin Coolidge, Stoddard shares personal anecdotes, behind-the-scenes observations, and astute political analysis that bring the figures of the Gilded Age and the early 20th century to life. The narrative delves into the complexities of presidential campaigns, the pressures of the Oval Office, and the evolving landscape of the American government. Stoddard's unique position as a trusted observer allows him to provide insights into the characters of men like William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, and Woodrow Wilson, offering a bridge between the public persona and the private individual. 'As I Knew Them' is an essential resource for those interested in political history, the evolution of the American presidency, and the influential role of the press in shaping national discourse. It stands as a vibrant record of a nation in transition, viewed through the eyes of a man who witnessed history in the making. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This New York journalist grabbed attention with his coverage of U.S. Grant's final illness and death at Mt. McGregor in 1885, and later became part owner and editor of "The New York Evening Mail"; he authored such political titles as "As I Knew Them: Presidents and Politics from Grant to Coolidge" (1927), "It Costs to Be President" (1938), "Horace Greeley: Printer, Editor, Crusader" (1946) and "Presidential Sweepstakes: The Story of Political Conventions and Campaigns" (1948). Bold "Sincerely Yours / Henry L. Stoddard in brown ink on an irregular 3 3/4" X 1 3/4" slip clipped from a full letter, as a half dozen words in his hand on the verso testify (".Shares of the N.Y. Stock for which."). Very good. With a second slip from the same letter, irreular 4 3/4" X 1", with printed "Graphic Publishing Co. / 39-41 Park Place" (and partial penned word "Editorial") and on verso a boldly penned "2" and "ndness & in the hope that." Interesting if cryptic pair, undated but from ink and New York letterhead likely 1890s.
