Eighth printing [stated]. xvii, [10], 352, [4] pages. Illustrations. Maps. Footnotes. Appendices. Notes. Index. Sherry Sontag is an investigative journalist who, before turning to Blind Man's Bluff, was a staff writer for the National Law Journal. While there, she wrote about the Soviet Union, international affairs, and domestic scandals in securities and banking. Prior to that, Sontag wrote for the New York Times. A lifelong resident of New York, she has degrees from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and Barnard College. Christopher Drew is an American investigative reporter for The New York Times. He has written on submarine espionage, on presidential campaigning, and other topics. Drew, and others, were the recipient of a George Polk Award in 2016 for reporting on the SEALS' SEAL Team 6 and on the killing of an Afghan in 2012. Drew reported from Washington D.C. for ten years, twice winning White House Correspondents' Association awards for national reportage. His book Blind Man's Bluff: The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage, co-authored with Sherry Sontag and with Annette Lawrence Drew, won an Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) certificate award in 1998. The Chicago Tribune team used Freedom of Information Act requests and examined formerly secret and dangerous submarine military actions. The book also won the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Prize in Naval History prize for the best book on American naval history published in 1998. Annette Drew, the book's researcher, has a Ph.D. in politics from Princeton. Over the course of five years, investigative reporters Sherry Sontag and Chris Drew interviewed hundreds of men who had never spoken about their underwater lives, not even to their wives and children. They uncovered a wealth of classified information: the tapping of undersea Soviet telephone cables, the stealing of Soviet weapons, the tragic collisions of enemy submarines. They tell of medals awarded in secret and deaths disguised with disinformation. Blind Man's Bluff is a critical work of history that reads with all the excitement of a Tom Clancy novel and all the tragedy of Das Boot. Derived from a Kirkus review: Enthralling real-life stories of American submarine spying that read as if torn from the pages of The Hunt for Red October, full of high-tech high-jinks and human drama. With materials combed from newspaper reports, American and Soviet archives, and the testimonies of officers and servicemen that could come forward only with the end of the Cold War, Blind Man's Bluff looks at one of the hottest theaters of that eraâ"the ocean depths, and how submarines have been used by both the navy and the CIA to gather intelligence and launch covert operations. Many of the actions described will be familiar to fans of military thrillers, but few readers will have heard these exploits described in such detail before. Included in the book are the stories of American tapping of Soviet communications cables in the Barents Sea, how the navy used a mathematical formula to find a lost warhead, and the tale of the legendary Glomar Explorer, a CIA-built excavation vessel. The authors, veteran investigative journalists (Drew is a reporter for the New York Times), have concentrated equally on the interdepartmental rivalry between the CIA and the navy. They paint an intriguing portrait of the internal strugglesâ"for funding, materials, manpower, and the president's attentionâ"that dictated how the Cold War was waged.
