Back cover detached but present. Volume 5: Letters of the Late Rev. Mr. Laurence Sterne to his most intimate friends, published by his daughter. 1805. 312 pages. Front cover loose. All 5 volumes have an late nineteenth century bookplate on the inside front cover, "Library of Edward C. Venable, Petersburg, VA" Venable was born in Farmville, VA in 1853. He attended high school in Petersburg, VA & then the University of Virginia. He died in 1908 and in buried in Petersburg. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1889 as a representative of Virginia's fourth district. His election was contested, primarily by John Mercer Langston, and after a 18 month battle he was replaced in the House of Representatives by Mr. Langston. Langston, who was in his sixties at the time, was the first African American elected to Congress from Virginia (and would be last for another 100 years). He served only 6 months before the next election, when he was defeated. Langston was the first head of the Law Department of Howard University. His biography on wikipedia shows a remarkable life. His connection to this set of Sterne, however, is merely tangential. Volume 1, 2, and 4 also have the ownership name "Braxton Harrison" written on the title page. Also the date 1806, making this the name of the original owner. This is a trickier search there are 3 Braxton Harrison's in the 1820 Virginia census. 2 were in Charles City County. That's about as much as I've been able to learn. The printer, John Wyeth, was born in New England, but showed up in Harrisburgh, PA in the early 1790s, when he took over the newspaper there. In the first decade of the 1800's he published a collection of Hymns which may be the most significant book to come off his press. They sold more than 150,000 copies. He also published a now-rare book on Distilling and brewing in 1809. It was the second book on distilling printed in the US. In 1792 George Washington appointed him Postmaster in Harrisburgh. 5 years later John Adams removed his commission, citing a conflict of interest between that post and being a newspaper owner.
