This volume contains four bound 'cheap' editions of four famous works - three early reprints of accounts of travel and exploration, and the last of philosophical essays. The works are printed in double-column and each contains its own title page and the full titles are: Incidents of Travel in Egypt, Arabia Petraea and the Holy Land by J.L. Stephens [John Lloyd] (1839); Incidents of Travel in Greece Turkey Russia and Poland by J.L. Stephens (1839); The Life and Travels of Mungo Park - Comprising an Original Memoir of His Early Life, a Reprint of the "Travels in the Interiror of Africa," Written by Himself, and Published in Quarto n 1798, and an Originial Account of the Progress of African Discovery from the Death of Park Till the Year 1838 (1838); and Essays Moral, Economical, and Political by Francis Bacon, with a Memoir of the Author (1838). The book is bound in contemporary or slightly later half leather over paper covered boards. There is no titling on the case of the book. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards. The leather on the spine and around the corners is scuffed with light bumping to the spine ends and a little damage and loss to the leather on the tip of the top front corner. There is some wear to the leather at the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few scattered marks from finger smudges and some small stains. Some of the pages are age-browned. There is a water stain around the top corner of the first dozen or so pages of 'Incidents of Travel in Egypt' and this account also has scattered but mostly light foxing. 'Incidents of Travel in Greece' has a few pencil written notes and lines on the margin of some pages and an ink written note on the bottom of page 80. 'Travels of Mungo Park has a name and date (1840) written on the title page and a note on the bottom of the last page. There is a split down the spine gutter, with the binding showing through, between pages 38 and 39 of the 'Essays by Francis Bacon'. The endpapers of the book are browned and foxed and a hand-written list of contents has been pasted onto the front fixed endpaper. There may be a few other minor faults within the book that have been missed.
