Sobre la base de más de diez años de investigaciones intensivas, incluidas entrevistas en profundidad y observaciones en los hogares, los autores -tres psiquiatras y un antropólogo cultural- utilizan la teoría de tos sistemas familiares para trazar el curso del desarrollo del alcoholismo en las familias. Ponen en tela de juicio muchas ideas vigentes en general, y muestran, por ejemplo que la identidad alcohólica de una familia la mantiene unida con tanta frecuencia, como la disgrega, y que las familias en las cuales el alcoholismo no invade las rutinas y los rituales no tienden a transmitir su identidad alcohólica a sus hijos.
