A collection of letters assemble by Erwin Stein, a Schoenberg scholar designed to demonstrate the breadth of Schoenberg's circle. Included are four separate letters with Gustav Mahler. Schoenberg was no one's fool, but created energy around his epistolary frankness. Together these letters paint a vivid picture of a composer who still churns the waters of convention. Igor Stravinsky actually wrote a very complimentary review of this ed. which is reprinted in 1966 "Episodes and Themes" - the 5th conversation book with Robert Craft.
