Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: g to vg. First edition. Folio (12 1/2 x 9 1/2"). xxxviii, [2], 615, [1]pp (Vol. 1); vi, 41, [3]pp (Text), 142pp (Photographic plates), 44 full-page and large folded plans (Vol. 2). Original full burgundy cloth, with gold lettering to spines. This striking two-volume set documents Richard Francis Strong Starr's expedition to the ancient Mesopotamian city of Nuzi (destroyed in 1350 B.C.), in modern-day Iraq, that unearthed the world's oldest map and armor. The map was dated to 2500 B.C. The excavation of Nuzi turned up also glass artifacts and thousands of clay tablets, marked in cuneiform, one of the earliest forms of writing. The tablets describe the society of the day and, when combined with the material excavated from Nuzi, create a powerful resource for scholars seeking to understand the Mesopotamian region of more than three thousand years ago. This scholarly set is profusely illustrated throughout with 142 b/w photographic plates as well as 44 full-page and large folded plans. Bindings slightly rubbed with sporadic and tiny discoloration spots on covers. Previous owner's name in ink on inside of each front cover. Bindings in overall good to good+, interior in very good condition.
