John Dalrymple, Fifth Earl of Stair (1720-1789), had previously only published legal work in his capacity as an advocate, but after he lost re-election as a representative peer in 1774 he turned his attention to economics and politics, with particular attention to American affairs. The Czarist fleet has moved to Calmar in southern Sweden to prevent the British and the Swedish fleets from meeting, while matters in Sicily are said to progress very satisfactorily: "Monsieur, Je vous suis tres obligé de vos lettres du 25 et du 28 aout et des nouvelles que vous m'y mandez du Nord.
