This day to day account reveals much of the tragedy of this war, and the stupidity, fear and humor - his account of the casualties they had to deal with contradicted the official count, with far more US soldiers being killed than accounted for. He also attacks the casual racism against the Vietnamese - winning the people is essential in guerilla warfare - and the fact that the US military leaders learned nothing from the experiences of the French.
