In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Charles St John's Note Books, 1846-1853: Invererne, Nairn, Elgin, published in Edinburgh by David Douglas in 1901 and edited by Admiral H. C. St John, presents selections from the private field notes of the Scottish naturalist and sportsman Charles William George St. John. Written during the last years of his life in the north east of Scotland, the notebooks record observations of wildlife, landscape and rural life around Invererne, Nairn and Elgin. The entries describe the habits of birds and animals, local weather and sporting excursions, offering a vivid glimpse of nineteenth century Highland natural history. Published long after the author's death, the work complements St John's well known Wild Sports and Natural History of the Highlands and remains an appealing record of Scottish wildlife and countryside life. Charles St John's Note Books, 1846-1853, Invererne, Nairn, Elgin. Edited by Admiral H.C. St John. The title refers to the Moray Firth district around Nairn, historically known as Invererne, where St John lived during the 1840s while recording his observations of Highland wildlife and rural life. Published by David Douglas, Edinburgh. 1901 first edition. A good dark green cloth hardback with gilt shield to front and titles to spine. Some wear, rubbing and bumping, with head and tail of spine a little ragged. Text is clean and bright with mild age toning. Pictorial endpapers. Gilt top edge. Text in English. In den Warenkorb8pp., landscape 16mo. An attractive little pamphlet, in the form of a letter 'To any whose privilege it is to have seen the Passion Play'. The pamphlet ends with five points, the last of which is: 'In rthe event of a repetition of the Passion Play in 1900, to urge Christians who may attend it to go in the spirit of pilgrimage, and to make provision for the spiritual interests of those who are present at the Play.' Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Scarce: the only copy on COPAC at Oxford, and no copy on OCLC WorldCat. From the papers of Sir Francis Henry Evans, whose wife Marie was of American extraction.

In den WarenkorbIllustrated copy - Price Two Shillings. Green printed wraps, 40pp., 8vo, wear and tear, contents shaky (staples rusting), wraps worn and sl. soiled, contents partly stained but clear and complete. St J. Hornby's copy. INSCRIBED by St John Hornby "StJH" on front on which is stamped (some faded) "Please do not use in the press before 6 Nov. 1931" i.e advanced review copy for distinguished customer. Hornby has annotated several items usually with the price and the purchaser (First item recorded, "Annals of Sporting and Fancy Gazette", Wills, £115; then a complete set of "Bentley's Miscellany", Freeman, £50; Latin Bible, Maggs, £40; Combe's "Dr Syntax", Mitchell, £140, and so on). The entry for The complete Pickwick in numbers attracts the most annotation. Hornby recalls the price of the Jerome Kern copy in 1929, £5600 [only two years before], that of the McGeorge copy, £1400, 1928 ("prob. finest & purest copy for years"); and the price this copy made, Bowden, £1480 "started £200 / Sotheran underbidder" - presumably aware of the impact on prices of the Crash. Perhaps St J. Hornby is displaying a collector's interest in certain items and/or recording information which bears on his collection. Another hand has written St J. Hornby on [p.40].
