An impressionistic view of Louisiana's domestic architecture with an index of the houses discussed in the text. The preface is by Nathaniel Cortland Curtis, Dean of the Tulane School of Architecture. Spratling was a silversmith and artist best known for his influence on 20th-century Mexican silver design. Scott was an author, playwright, actress, newspaperwoman and columnist in New Orleans. Specific areas include: the east and west banks of the Mississippi; St. Francisville and the "Forida Parishes;" along Bayou Lafourche; Houma; Teche country; Natchitoches; New Orleans and vicinity. Specific plantations include: Destrehan; Belle Helene; Rosedown; Oak Alley; Parlange; Belle Alliance; Shadows on the Teche.

Modest wear on the binding, fading at the spine ends, foxing throughout the text, front gutter over-opened, still sound and very good, lacking the dust jacket. The bookplates belong to Gladys Freeman Cahn, an important New Orleans social welfare and civil rights advocate. Cahn held high ranking positions in many civil rights organizations, and received an award in 1953 from the Louisiana chapter of the NAACP for "courageous and untiring efforts in the field of human relations.".
