First editions, first printings. 366pp, with monochrome plate frontispiece and 24 further black and white plate illustrations; 436pp, with monochrome plate frontispiece and 18 further black and white plates. Black cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering to spine. 8vos. Cloth is worn, rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends, lightly bumped in places on edges, unevenly discoloured and no longer smooth, a couple of tiny paper marks (old water damage?). Upper text block edges toned and darkened, remaining edges spotted. Some mild spotting on first and last few leaves in both volumes, else internally neat and clean. In their original dust wrappers, worn and torn, rubbed and bumped at edges with some chips and crumpled at spine ends, shelf worn; that on volume two has some loss on rear upper edge.

Scattered foxing, mainly to vol I. Bookplate of Professor Gilbery Murray (1866-1959) plus presentation note laid down on the first free endpaper.
