He accepts an invitation from the Committee of the Railway Orphanage at Derby to "open the completed buildings on a specified day". "The enclosed statement by Sir James Alport the Treasurer fully explains the objects of this Institution which cannot fail to enlist the sympathy of all who value the great advantages which have been conferred upon the public by Railways, and I trust that he may be able to announce on the opening day such an addition to the funds in the shape of donations as will justify the Committee in making use of the increased accommodation now provided by the admission of children of Railway servants who have been killed by accidents while in the performance of their duties, and to secure the great benefits of the Institution.".

In reply to the unnamed recipient's letter he explains that he would 'find it very difficult to come to Derby for the distribution of the Prizes at the Grammar School in the month of July', as all his 'free days in that month are already disposed of and parliamentary and official exigencies might interfere with any engagements I might make for the remainder.' If however he can let him know 'what amount of time, & at what period of the day, would be required', he will see whether he can make a 'provisional engagement'. He recently wrote to the Bishop of Derby regarding the school, 'and found that the [?] take too desponding a view of its prospects'.
