Hardcover with dust jacket. Zustand: Gut. XVII, 159 p. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar ohne Anstreichungen / a good and clean copy without markings. - Rhetorics of Reason and Desire traces the appearance of rhetoric in key literary works from classical times to the Middle Ages, focusing on the reception and transformation of Ciceronian rhetoric in Vergil's A eneid, Augustine's Confessions and On Christian Doctrine, and the lyrics of the early troubadours. Sarah Spence offers innovative readings of texts that, subvert the traditional rhetorical systems of their orator protagonists. Asserting that Ciceronian rhetoric articulates a par adigm which elevates reason and suppresses desire, Spence shows how Vergil counters the presuppositions of that humanist rhetori cal system, particularly the function of desire and the role of the audience. At the same time, Vergil suggests ways in which desire can be reincorporated into rhetoricways that foreshadow Augustine's revisions of the humanist rhetorical system. She finds evidence of this new Christian rhetoric in the paintings in the Roman catacombs and considers the transformation from a classical to a Christian rhetoric exemplified by Augustine's Confessions, as a direct response to Vergil. Spence concludes by analyzing the reaction against Augustinian rhetoric implicit in the lyrics of several troubadour poets who confront issues of oratory. She demonstrates how the changes initiated by Augustine became problematical in secular literature and how the reincorporation of desire into rhetorical strategy, despite its liberating effects, served also to limit the power and control of the secular orator. Readable and provocative, Rhetorics of Reason and Desire will appeal to a wide range of readers, including comparatists, classicists, historians of rhetoric, and medievalists. / Contents Illustrations Preface Abbreviations Introduction: Desire and the Rhetorical Tradition part one The Rhetoric of Cupidity 1 Vergil's Orator 2 Juno's Desire part two The Hermeneutics of Charity 3 Augustine and the Reincorporation of Desire 4 Rhetorical Anxiety in Troubadour Lyric Conclusion: Legacy of the Divine Spark Notes Index. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book analyzes key twelfth-century Latin and vernacular texts that articulate a subjective autobiographical stance. The reader is led into a complex maze of paths, through intellectually daunting issues such as the relation of subject to object, self to body, body to text and text to language. The contention is that the self forged in medieval literature could not have come into existence without the gap between Latinity and the vernacular and the shift in perspective in the twelfth century toward a visual and spatial orientation.
