An Anglican priest, Sparrow was ejected from the rectory of Hawkedon in 1647 for using Thomas Cranmer's Book of Common Prayer, vehemently outlawed during the Interregnum. In 1655, after a proclamation affirming the continued prohibition of the book, Sparrow anonymously published this controversial essay staunchly defending it.
