Aufgrund der offenen Inszenierung von Gewalt und Rassismus auf mehreren narrativen Ebenen scheint die filmische Umsetzung prädestiniert für eine vergleichende Analyse von Stereotypisierungen und Rassismus.Die Rolle der Schwarzen in der US-Amerikanischen Gesellschaft diente schon immer als Grundlage für Forscher um eine Auseinandersetzung mit den Begrifflichkeiten von Rassismus und ihren Ideologien in den Cultural Studies. Vom teilweise 17. bis 19. Jahrhundert wurden die schwarzen als rechtlose Sklaven meistens als Arbeitskräfte zumeist in der Landwirtschaft eingesetzt, doch einige von Ihnen, besonders weibliche Sklavinnen kamen auch in Häusern und Unterkünften von Plantagenbesitzern und deren Familien unter, in denen sie typische häusliche Arbeit und Hilfe leisten mussten. Am bekanntesten und berüchtigtsten ist jedoch die Vorstellung der Sklavenarbeit auf den Plantagen des Südens der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, welche für europäische Zeitgenossen ein bis zum Einsetzen der Abolitionsbemühungen im Verlauf des 18. und 19.
