Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 2nd Edition. One of the earliest independent shoestring guides, predating BIT, Lonely Planet and Bradt. Original orange and brown illustrated wraps 12x18cm. Dated 1972, this was printed by Multivers, Copenhagen, in 1973. 56pp including several b/w maps. Wraps very good with corner creasing, interiors fine. Rare, with Worldcat recording around 10 locations (OCLC: 677878, 223163849). The authors define "cheap travel" based on an average all-in weekly cost of US $25. Their first edition appeared in 1971. With a lack of information available before departure, they wrote it based on a several month trip in 1970, drawing on their own experiences and those of others met en-route. This 2nd edition includes minor additions and corrections to layout to make it more readable (Prefaces). It opens with general information (documents, currency, health, water, food, luggage, entry, where to stay, transport, etc). The main part covers countries and routes including: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Routes through the Sahara, Senegal, Gambia, Mali, Niger, Upper Volta (Burkina Faso), Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Dahomey (southern Benin), Nigeria, Central Africa, East Africa, Southern Africa, and Europe to Africa by boat and plane. The country sections are often in note form, consistently organised into: Introduction, Entry formalities, Where to stay, Transportation (internal and to neighbouring countries), Tourist points, and Various. Inevitably, some countries are better resourced for backpackers than others. Options for accommodation in Gambia's capital Bathurst (Banjul) for example are extremely limited: "Only extremely expensive hotels, so most hitch-hikers sleep on the beach", while its second largest settlement George Town (Janjanbureh) has a "nice Government Resthouse with two beds for about 60 batut per bed" (p24). General advice in remote villages is the find the Village Chief / Chef de Village who may provide a hut for a small amount or money or a present (p9). Among recommended items to pack "War and Peace or equivalent to while away the time waiting for lifts", and a tip on selling items on the way such as cheap watches bought in Gibraltar (p7). The cultural information however is thin, with no explicit discussion of religion, local manners or customs that became a feature of later, much longer and more polished guides by Lonely Planet, Rough Guide et al. (The authors produced a much expanded edition, "Africa for the Hitchhiker", published by Bramsen & Hjort in English and Danish in 1974 and 1976).…
