(B&W photographs) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "Warm regards to / George Stubbs / Cedric Belfrage / Cuernavaca Jan 5 1965." The author, following his McCarthy-era deportation from the United States, lived for many years in Mexico, and here gives a sort of leftist's Cook's tour of Latin America, with specific attention to the question of the effect of the Cuban Revolution on other countries in the region. "Starting and ending in Cuba, the author made a five months' journey in 1962 through the area -- previously terra incognita to him, as to most gringos -- to find out. He has written a personal, informal travel diary about life in the new Cuba and people he met on the mainland, from ideological hairsplitters in cafes to angry peasants on feudal haciendas to activista Fidel Castro disciples in and out of jail." Chapters or partial chapters are devoted to Haiti, Venezuela, British Guiana, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Panama. Laid in is a TLS from the author to "Bob," dated January 4, 1965, in which he writes mostly about a mutual acquaintance of theirs named Hermes Lima, a Brazilian politician and Supreme Court justice who had previously served in a number of governmental positions (including briefly in 1962/63 as the country's Prime Minister); the letter is folded in quarters but is otherwise in excellent condition. The author (1904-1990) was an interesting fellow -- a British "gentleman" who miraculously acquired some serious class consciousness, and after a stint as a film critic (among other things) eventually became a political journalist/editor in the U.S., co-founding The National Guardian, a leading voice of progressive dissent during the McCarthy Era. (This put him in the cross-hairs of the U.S. Government and ultimately led to his deportation, with the government claiming he was a Soviet spy -- which may have been true, although it's also been suggested that he was a double agent, working for the British.) He also wrote a handful of good novels along the way, before turning almost exclusively to political topics.
