In den WarenkorbFIRST EDITION. Square-shaped 8vo, amply illustrated with 40 b/w photographic plates, many featuring monks with beards. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, upper board decoration stamped in gilt. Front map endpapers. Spine darkened, boards soiled and dusty, wear to extremities. Feps toned, else, clean and bright, especially the plates. Good- A well-handled first edition copy of Ralph Brewster's wonderfully titled and "provocative" travelogue about his visit to the monks of mount Athos with his Greek friend Iorgos; he tells us that the trip was prompted by "the Italian archaeologist, Dr. L" observing: "But of course there are women on Mount Athos! How would it be possible for six thousand men to live together without a single woman? I visited the monastery of Lavra last year, and I am sure that the under-secretary, at any rate, is a woman disguised as a monk. I made a photograph of him: there can hardly be any doubt, 'You have only to look at his face her face'". A talented photographer, Brewster's book originally began life as a photography project to capture "the intimate family life of the 6,000 Holy Beards," as Ethel Smyth put it in a typically spirited and arch prologue. In 1931, the same year he visited Mount Athos, Brewster made headlines in Greek newspapers when he stole the best preserved herm of the archaic period from the island of Siphnos and smuggled it out of the country. Though eventually seized in Italy and returned to Greece, Brewster was shielded from criminal proceedings by his connections with the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and the German Archaeological Institute and the theft described as "a youthful misdemeanor" and attributed to "the bad influence of 'some shady Greeks'" (see Vogeikoff-Brogan, 2021). The episode did bring to an end to Brewster's archaeological career and he was denied entrance to Greece for several years. The herm is now held in the collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Greece. Described as a queer "curiosity," 6,000 Beards nevertheless proved popular: its first printing sold out, with Duckworth issuing a second edition in 1939 and Penguin following with a third in 1944. According to Sir Michael Llewellyn-Smith, "largely through the experiences of Yiorgos [Iorgos], it [the book] touches on the question of homosexuality on the Holy Mountain. Brewster himself was homosexual. His book is mildly shocking if it is true, and shocking in another way if it not true".
