Vols. 3 and 4 (of originally a 4 vol. set), these two volumes in ONE book, printed in Ireland in 1793, is in Poor condition, being in appalling shape: cover leather is practically all-eaten away by ancient silverfish, and those hellish creatures have long ago bored into the spine leaving a deep depression; portion of the top spine is gone (see our photo); front cover literally hangs by a thread; former bookplate of one of the famous O'Grady's of Kilballyowen, pasted to front fixed endpaper (now beginning to pull away slightly); former O'Grady owner has signed their name in fountain-ink on the title page; interior pages all present, although the bound-side does show the effects of ancient silverfish in places. A glorious ruin of a book, demonstrating what time and unfortunate circumstance can bring. This appears to be the famous Tobias Smollett English translation, and the publisher has mis-identified T. Smollett as Thomas Smollett. Again this is only the last two volumes (bound as one) of the set. Only one illustration: the frontispiece. Fiction. French. Novel. Classics. DB.

The writings contained within are from a host of the great names in English literature, including; Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Henry Fielding, Tobias Smollett et al. The original broadsheets were printed on thin paper so they could be including with a letter, and were indeed sent in their hundreds of thousands. 2 Volumes; A Book of Broadsheets & A Second Book of Broadsheets, with an Introduction by Geoffrey Dawson, Editor of 'The Times'. Published by Methuen & Co. Ltd., London. A book of Broadsheets is a second edition, published in 1928, printed soon after the first printing of October 4th 1928. A Second Book of Broadsheets is a first edition from 1929. Some mild offsetting to endpapers. Previous owner's name to first free endpaper. One volume carries the namecard of a Captain Gilbert Pybus, of the 1st Battalion The Sikh Regiment (King George's Own'). Maroon title labels on all three volumes. There were originally brown labels for volume numbers, but they have chipped off. Scuffing to the spines. All the boards are attached and all the bindings are tight. This version is in English. Illustrated with engravings. Bindings, text blocks, all good and tight. Each volume has the name of "Harold Phelps Stokes" neatly rubberstamped on the inside front cover. Stokes was the son of NY Banking magnate Anson Stokes; he worked in the Hoover administration and for many years at the NY Times. He inherited large sections of the Stokes/Phelps family library, and added his name discreetly to them. Gil Blas was first published between 1715 and 1735 in French. A nine volume set, lacking Volume VII, containing Volumes I - VI, and VIII - X. Volumes I to III of this set are the second editions, and Volumes IV to X are the third editions. This work is a thorough history of England, documenting from the descent of Julius Caesar, to the Treaty of Aix la Chapelle in 1748, overing roughly one thousand eight hundred and three years. The history focuses on the important events over the years, looking at each monarch and how they ruled, as well as looking at the lives of their people. Volume I, published 1758, with six plates, and five folding plates. Volume II, published 1758, with four plates. Volume III, published 1758, with four plates. Volume IV, published 1758, with three plates. Volume V, published 1758, with eight plates. Volume VI, published 1759, with twenty-two plates. Volume VIII, published 1759, with sixteen plates. Front hinge is Volumes IV and X are starting but firm, whereas the front hinges of Volume I, II, III, VI, VIII, and IX are strained, resulting in the front joints of Volumes VI and VIII to be starting. Rear hinges of Volumes II, III, IV, and IX are starting but firm, where the rear hinges of Volumes IV, V, VIII, and X are strained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are a touch age-toned with scattered spotting. Plates with some dusting to the fore edge and edegwear.Pages 7 - 10 to Volume VIII are working loose. Volume X is lacking the front endpapers. Loss to the rear endpapers of Volume IX. Closed tear close to the gutter for the folding plate facing page 27 in Volume I, with smaller closed tears to the extremities and gutter of the other folding plates in Volume I, being a little heavier to the plate facing page 125.
