Black Blind-Stamped Cloth. Zustand: VG. 1st ed. vii+424, this is number 54 and inscribed to 'The Misses Longman' top half-title, with as small text correction ( 'past' for 'passed') to margin p.264 in the same hand (probably his widow's, who edited the work); prev.owner's small gilt label top front pastedown, earlier red heraldic label of George Pottrell centre same, a few ball-point squiggles to facing endpaper, otherwise internally clean, tight and unmarked; covers clean and mostly minimally worn, however chip across top spine has been very neatly repaired and a similar across bottom has been relaid, bottom spine has 'Not Published' but 'ed' and most of 'h' are lost. Despite the faults this remains a very good copy of this scarce collection of Smith's popular lectures, mostly on psychological topics (the the province of 'mental philosophy' such as memory, imagination, passions, beauty and habit. A short letter with a good, emphatic signature: 'My dear Sr. | I am very sorry you have so good a plea for absence - only remember on some future occasion that I shall not ask your Company as a favor but insist upon it as a right | ever yours | [signed] Sydney Smith | May. 12. 1842'. Perhaps concerning the same breakfast on 14 May 1842 to which Smith invited Georgiana Harcourt on 10 May 1842 (Letters, ed. N. C. Smith, vol.2, p.756).…

3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged. The reverse of the second leaf laid down on part of leaf from an album, the other side of which carries an engraving of Lord Melbourne. The letter is endorsed '1838 Sept 7# | Lady Holland' on the reverse of the second learf, and at the head of the first page: 'R[eplied]. at Dalmeny | Septr. 12. 1838'. There is no salutation to the letter (which is also unsigned), but the reference to Dalmeny House would appear to suggest that the recipient was Archibald Primrose, 4th Earl of Rosebery, or his second wife, born Anne Margaret Anson. The handwriting is hard to decipher. It begins: 'I was very much obliged by your letter, glad you have [?] but I should have liked to have heard something of our old inmates [?] about whom I hardly knew anything - We performed our journey remarkably well. It was my first Essay for many Years with Post Horses, - and most successful it proved - We have [?] Sailed or embarked rather this Morning, but our Capt & the Commander of Packet [?] us to [?] embarked 24 hours as we could not make Calais, & the [?] is very heavy - I hope we shall not be out frying pan [?] Tomorrow - Write me a full letter which send by the Ambassadors Bag.' Lady Holland concludes her letter with a reference to Sydney Smith: 'S. Smith has written a Pamphlet on the Ballot, without Politicks & [?] fair bona fide discussion he is an anti-ballotist - tho' out of temper with Lord M[elbourne] he says he shall always Vote with the Whigs & says as to John he [?] him but must Chasten him - Some of my party are already Pale [last word underlined] | Yrs truly | [no signature].…

In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Annotations in pencil in a modern hand. He begins by apologising for not being able to 'come to your party on Monday', as he was 'forced to go to Bed[.] I always knock up the 2d or 3d Week of London - There is nothing in this World so fatiguing, and horrible as pleasure -'. He wonders whether it might not be possible that 'some persons for their Sins here will be doomed hereafter to four thousand Years of amusement [last five words underlined] namely 1000 of Morning Visits - 1000 Dining out - 1000 seeing pictures & Statues - 500 flirting and 500 routes - Total 4,000 -'. Signed, 'God bless you dear Madam / Sydney Smith'.…

The four items in good condition, lightly aged, with stubs from mounts still adhering. The first three are bifoliums, carrying seals in red wax (that to the third letter broken). The second letter is addressed to her at Grosvenor Square; the third and fourth to her at Upper Brook Street. ONE: No place or date. [London, on paper with watermark of 'J GREEN & SON | 1824'.] 1p, 12mo. 'I am always sorry to quit London dear Mrs Cunliffe never more so than when by doing so I lose the opportunity of enjoying your Society this is in Rogers Style except that it is true' (the reference is to the poet Samuel Rogers). In a postscript he gives details of his forthcoming trip to Yorkshire, and asks, 'how is Lord Tavistock?' TWO: '3 Weymouth St'. No date (Smith was at this address around 1835). 1p, 12mo. He answered her letter of the previous day 'expressing my entire resolution to dine with you on the 28th. a resolution with the Wisdom of which the more I reflect upon it the more I am satisfied'. 'I had been practicing [sic] Steps all the morning but was prevented by the lateness of London dinners from appearing at an hour which would have been decorous in a man of any Gravity'.
