hardcover, large format. Zustand: very good condition. First Edition. - - Monarch Series No 1 - - Not as well known as the German Messerschmitt 262 jet fighter, but just as important to the German war effort, was the Arado 234 Blitz (Lightning). This jet-propelled, twin-engined and four-engined bomber and reconnaissance warplane was produced in comparatively small numbers, less than 300, but its advanced design and superb handling qualities, made it a well-respected and well-liked airplane. It performed well as a single-seat jet bomber but its greatest contribution to the German war effort was its ability to fly higher and faster than Allied fighters over enemy territory while taking valuable photographs for German planners. Authors Smith and Creek present here, for the first time, the definitive history of this remarkable WW II German warplane. This book is the first volume of several planned around specific German World War II aircraft. Subsequent volumes will be released at intervals. - 264 pages - 418 photographs - 72 color photographs - 18 color illustrations - 87 drawings - 2 color maps 264 p. many photos, drawings and illustrations, many in color.

Zustand: very good condition. Me 262 Volume Three continues J Richard Smith's and Eddie J Creek's detailed analysis of the world's first operational jet fighter and fighter-bomber. This book details pianned night fighter variants and covers the night war waged by the Me 262 against the threat of the British Mosquito over Berlin in 1945: - "I had caught a Mosquito illuminated in the searchlights at about 8,500 metres. However, because l had not managed to manoeuvre my Me 262 into the proper position, the rapid ciosing speed forced me to break off before l could finish my attack. With a top speed of 850 km/h, l was much faster than the Mosquito in front of me. l contacted the fighter controller by radio, asking him to keep the Mosquito illuminated. Then, l tried making a full turn to keep the enemy aircraft at the correct distance for a second attack." - Also included is a day-by-day account of the Me 262's role in the daylight defence of the Third Reich between January and March 1945. The authors have drawn extensively from the personal accounts of both German and Allied pilots as well as thousands of archive documents: - "These guys came up so fast that we never knew what hit us. My aircraft was badly hit in the engine and port wing by cannon shells, and l was about to bale out when it seemed that the aircraft was still flyable. Lt. Florine's P-38 was not hit and he spent the next few minutes keeping the two jets off my back by diving into them each time they tried to dose and finish me. Like my aircraft, his was unarmed. There is little doubt that he risked his own life to save mine." - Following more than thirty years of research, Me 262 Volume Three forms part of the most comprehensive account of the Luftwaffe's revolutionary jet fighter ever published. ca. 220 p. many photos, drawings and illustrations, some in color Hardcover with dust jacket, large format.

Zustand: very good condition. In this, the second volume of their unprecedented study of the Messerschmitt Me 262, internationally renowned authors, J.Richard Smith and Eddie J.Creek have drawn on more than thirty years of unrivalied research to continue the story of the worid's first operational military jet aircraft. - This book examines the impact the Me 262 made upon the course of the European air war following its operational debut with Erprobungskommando 262 in the summer of 1944. This extraordinary new aircraft was a vital element to a possible revival of Nazi Germany's flagging war effort for as Hitler told his generals before the Normandy invasion: "Every month that passes makes it more probable that we will get at least one Gruppe of jet aircraft. The most important thing is that the enemy get some bombs on top of them as they try to invade. If we can pin them on the beaches for just six to eight hours, you can see what that will mean to us." Indeed, as one senior Allied air commander warned in June, 1944: "German jets could wash away our air superiority tomorrow and give the Luftwaffe an immense advantage." - Using the frank and concise personal reports of Messerschmitt's front-line inspectors, as well as combat reports and other eye-witness accounts, the authors reveal the later tactical successes and failures of the aircraft as it was deployed in both the fighter role with Kommando Nowotny and in the bomber role with Kommando Schenk and KG 51 over the western front in the autumn of 1944. - Also included is an in-depth look at the array of ingenious and formidable weapons systems designed for the aircraft as well as detailed descriptions of the projected rocket-powered interceptor, BMW-engined and heavily armed and armoured variants. - With 370 photographs - many never before published - together with more than thirty high-precision technical scale drawings plus 30 full-colour interpretations and biographies of many of the military personalities associated with the early operations of the aircraft, this study is unquestionably the most comprehensive account of the Me 262 ever written. It will be an essential requirement for both students of early jet aircraft development and all those with an interest in the history of military aviation. - - [Volume One of this work covers the design, development and testing of the Me 262. Successive volumes of this work will cover the remaining operational history and further development of the Me 262.] ca. 120 p. many photos, drawings and illustrations, some in color Hardcover with dust jacket, large format.

Zustand: excellent condition. This is the intriguing and fascinating story of an aircraft which could have been one of the most important weapons in the Luftwaffe's armoury and a major problem to the wartime Allies, the Heinkel He 177 strategic bomber. Due however to political incompetence and design vacillation during its development it was never to achieve its full potential. - At its conception there were conflicting views on how it should be used. One problem was that the huge aircraft should be capable of delivering its bombs in a dive. Another was the technical one associated with its enormous engines, two conventional units coupled together to drive a single propeller. These difficulties were never really satisfactorily solved and Heinkel's suggestion that a version be produced powered by four separate engines fell on deaf ears until it was far too late. Eventually the engine problems were largely solved but, by that time, Germany lacked the reserves of fuel to mount a major strategic bombing attack. - The problems that beset the aircraft were to have a disastrous effect on the brave men, both test pilots and operational crews, who flew the aircraft. - Many died due to crashes attributed not only to the unreliable engines, but also to a fundamental weakness with the wing. The story of the He 177 is made more unfortunate by the British aircraft industry's experience. It too developed a strategic bomber to be powered by two massive 24-cylinder engines which was also to be capable of delivering its bombs in a dive. However the resulting Avro Manchester was quickly withdrawn from service and replaced by the four-engined Lancaster, which proved one of the most successful aircraft of the war. - In telling the absorbing story of this aircraft in what is the most comprehensive study to appear in the English language, authors J. Richard Smith and Eddie J. Creek have been able to draw on many previously unpublished documents and photographs. Accompanied by some superb colour profile artworks, this is a major work of reference for all World War 2 historians and aviation enthusiasts. 208 p. many photos, some in color, technical drawings hardcover with dust jacket, large format.

In this second volume of their study of this important aircraft, Luftwaffe historians, J. Richard Smith and Eddie J. Creek offer a detailed insight into both the mid-war operations of the Fw 190 as well as its ongoing technical development. - In the spring of 1943, German forces prepared themselves forthe titanic battle of Kursk. In this battle, the Fw 190 played a key role, equipping some four Luftwaffe fighter Gruppen and two Schlachtgruppen. Together, these units fought a determined campaign against the Soviets by operating both in the air superiority role over the battlefield and as ground-attack aircraft. Throughout the ultimately unsuccessful 'Zitadelle' offensive, Fw 190s flew unprecedented numbers of sorties, providing critical air support. - Meanwhile, in a radical innovation which demonstrated its operational dexterity, the Fw 190 was deployed as a free-roaming night fighter in the defence of the Reich which led the German Propaganda machine to elevate such pilots to the Status of national heroes. In skies lit up by searchlights, Fw 190s took their toll on the aircraft of RAF Bomber Command. As these units were expanded, so radar technology was developed and used by the Fw 190s in the pursuit of the bombers. - By mid-1943, the Axis had lost the battle for North Africa and the Fw 190-equipped Gruppen pulled back to Sicilian airfields. From there these units conducted air strikes against Malta which would be the Allied base from which the invasion of Sicily would be launched. Following the fall of Sicily, Fw 190s also mounted continuous attacks on Allied shipping off the Sicilian coast and over Pantelleria. - In the West, in a dramatic escalation in the air war, the Fw 190-equipped fighter units waged a bitter war against the American daylight bomber offensive and many pilots increased their personal victory tallies while flying the Focke-Wulf to become 'Experten'. New air-to-air weaponry was introduced, and tactics hammered out to deal with both the heavily-defended bomber formations and their fighter escorts, which began to reach ever deeper into the Reich. - By the end of December 1943 Luftwaffe forces were again facing a third gruelling Russian winter and the war in the East became a contest between the German skills and determination and a significant improvement in Soviel fighter defences. German grew in early 1944, butthe Fw 190 remained at the forefront of the Luftwaffe's operations from Leningrad to the Ukraine. But with the increasing demands for fighters to defend the Reich against enemy bombers, inevitably resources became stretched. - Despite this, production of the Fw 190 remained high with the construction of 1,950 Fw 190 A-8s demanded between February and May 1944. The authors review in detail the continued Programme of development and improvement initiated by Focke-Wulf to maintain the Fw 190's edge. This sawthe introduction of new 'weapons packs' allowing easy Installation in the field for conversion and enhancement, as well as navigation, radio and radar equipment. In recognition of the vitally important role of the fighter-bomber, extensive development work took place in the area of bomb racks and aerial torpedoes. The authors also reveal the struggle facing BMW and Focke-Wulf to maximise engine performance. - This volume also offers coverage of the Fw 190 trainers and the units which operated them, as well as the aircraft-ferrying units - an oft-overlooked part of the story - while Luftwaffe historian. Nick Beale, joins the authors to tell the story of the campaign in Italy in the early months of 1944 as Fw 190s fought doggedly to strike at Allied shipping off Salerno, Anzio and, later, to defend the Gustav Line. - The authors have researched the Fw 190 for more than 35 years and have assembled an unrivalled archive of documents, manuals and drawings, and photographs. - This study forms the key reference work. 332 p. many photos, some in color, technical drawings very good condition, one corner slightly bumped, one small tear at the edge of the dust jacket hardcover with dust jacket, large format.

Zustand: excellent condition. Because it undoubtedly ranks as one of the premier and most successful aircraft of World War Two, the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 has been the subject of a great number of books; many of these however have done little more than to scratch the surface of the aircraft's complex and extensive history, much less its design and development during the late 1930s and, and many, in reality, give scant accurate information on this remarkable aircraft. - When a design was first proposed in 1938, it was for an aircraft with good handling characteristics and performance which could be produced in the shortest possible time. This was to be achieved though simple design, with major sub-assemblies which could be installed or replaced without incurring excessive fitting work. Maximum reliability was to be achieved through the avoidance of complicated mechanics. An ease of serviceability was requested through good accessibility and reliable parts. Thus emerged Kurt Tank's radial-engined Fw 190. - When it first appeared in Luftwaffe service in the skies over France in late 1941, the Fw 190 represented a formidable and ominous foe to the RAF. Entering service with JG 26, the new fighter was powered by a BMW 801 engine which developed 1,700 hp. Despite some initial technical problems, mainly due to its new BMW engine, the Fw 190 soon proved itself as a dependable and potent fighter aircraft. At key altitudes, it was markedly superior to the existing marks of Spitfire and Hurricane - and armed with two nose-mounted machine guns and two fast-firing wing-mounted cannon, with provision for further armament, it 'packed a punch'. - This considerable armament package blended with manoeuvrability on the ground pleased pilots; the wide undercarriage track of the Fw 190 was an improvement over the Bf 109 F, as was the air-cooled engine technology which bettered that of the more vulnerable liquid-cooled system on the Messerschmitt. - By 20 June 1942, some 250 Fw 190s were operational in the West. This was a shock to the Allies and provided a new dimension to air combat on the Western Front - as did the appearance in strength of the USAAF's heavy bombers. The encounters which would follow over the next three years between the B-17 and the Fw 190 would form some of the most titanic and bitter contests of the air war. - Meanwhile, the Eastern Front provided the German fighter force with an abundance of targets and quickly, the Fw 190 -known by the sobriquet of 'Butcher Bird' - proved to be the best piston-engined fighter of the war. A great number of German aces were created flying the Fw 190, many quickly surpassing the 100-kill mark. Flying over extensive distances often in extreme weather conditions, the Fw 190 also excelled in the ground-attack role, inflicting destruction and damage to Soviet armour and ground defences. The Fw 190 would go onto see combat for five years on every battlefront on which the Luftwaffe fought. - In this first volume of their magnificent study of this important aircraft, world-renowned Luftwaffe historians, J. Richard Smith and Eddie J. Creek portray and explain the story behind the design and development of the Fw 190 as well as its introduction to operational service on the Western Front, in the East and in North Africa between 1941-1943. They have researched this aeroplane for more than 35 years and have assembled an unrivalled archive of documents, manufacturer's manuals and drawings, and photographs. This study is the key reference work. 336 p. many photos, some in color, technical drawings hardcover with dust jacket, large format.

Zustand: excellent condition. In this, the third volume of the trilogy which Aeroplane magazine has described as 'certainly the definitive work on the Fw 190 so far', Luftwaffe histonans J. Richard Smith and Eddie J. Creek turn to the final phases of the Second World War and the crucial role that the Fw 190 played in defending the airspace over the Third Reich as well as its part in the great battles on the Eastern Front from the summer of 1944. - When Allied forces landed in France in June of that year to launch the Invasion of north-west Europe, the Luftwaffe fielded just over 100 Focke-Wulf fighter, ground-attack and reconnaissance machines with which to repel them. This figure was drastically increased as the Luftwaffe reacted to the danger in Normandy, transferring units from the Reich, and from that point on, and for the next eleven months, German pilots fought some of their most bitter and intense air battles over the Western Front as they attempted to hold back the Allied advance through France, Belgium, Holland and into Germany itself. - To the south, in Italy, the Luftwaffe deployed the Fw 190 to attack Allied convoys in the Mediterranean, while from Macedonia, Focke-Wulfs were used to cover the German retreat from Greece. Later äs the Allied armies advanced through Italy, more aircraft were deployed in the nocturnal fighter and ground-attack roles. - But perhaps some of the most epic encounters took place between the Jagdgruppen and the heavy bombers of the USAAF as the Allied Strategie bomber offensive struck at targets all over occupied Europe and the Reich itself. This was a draining, attritional mission, but one which nevertheless took its toll on the bombers. The Fw 190 was up-rated to include heavier armour and high calibre weapons for close-range operations - so-called 'Sturmjäger' (assault fighters) - against the four-engined heavy bombers which came fortified with strong defensive armament and fighter escort. As one Fw 190 pilot recalled: The outlook in store for us on each mission was frightening and awful. However, when the US escort fighters could not get to us, we were sure to cause some serious damage amongst the bombers.' - Simultaneously, in the second half of 1944, in the East, Fw 190 units battled to stem the 'Red tide' across a vast front stretching from Finland, Latvia and northern Russia to the Ukraine. But eventually, the central sector of the German defensive line gave way, and the Wehrmacht began a retreat through Poland, Hungary and Rumania. Using bombs and new anti-tank rocket projectiles, the Fw 190-equipped Schlachtgruppen performed well against Soviel armour, but it was often a story of 'too little, too late'. Against an enemy surae-rior in numbers, losses inevitably climbed both among veteran unit com-manders äs well as among younger, less experienced pilots in units suffering from shortages in fuel, ammunition and spares. - Despite the reversals which Axis forces suffered from late 1944 on-wards, this was a time of considerable technological advances in avia-tion design, not least of which related to the Fw 190 and its engines and armament. The authors describe the introduction of the 'long-nosed' Fw 190 D-9, which, with its high-performance Jumo 213 engine, was intended to engage heavy bombers at higher altitudes. Also covered are the later 'D' variants and the progressive development in BMW and Jumo engines, as well as new designs in special weapons such äs upward-firing batteries, heavy calibre armament and rockets. Also included in this volume are appendices which include exhaustive data on Fw 190 pilot losses, prototypes and production variants. - The authors have researched the Fw 190 for more than 35 years and have assembled an unrivalled archive of documents, manufacturers' manuals and drawings, and photographs. - With hundreds of photographs, drawings and specially commis-sioned colour artwork, this study is the key reference work. 330 p. many photos, some in color, technical drawings hardcover with dust jacket, large format.

Zustand: Gut. This is the fourth and final volume in J. Richard Smith and Eddie J Creek's chronological study of the Messerschmitt Me 262 and it concludes the work by focusing on the last, desperate days of the jet's daylight combat operations during April and May 1945. Using rare eye-witness accounts, the authors portray both sides of the air war between the Me 262 and Allied piston engine fighters and bombers. The authors have drawn extensively from the personal accounts of both German and Allied pilots as well as thousands of archive documents.
