Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. "In 1800 Sir William Herschel carried out a series of experiments to determine the distribution of heating power among the various colours in the solar spectrum. He explored a prismatic spectrum projected on a table, using as a heat detector a sensitive mercury-in-glass thermometer which could be moved along the spectrum. He was surprised to find that the heating power increased towards the red end of the spectrum and did not reach a maximum till the thermometer had been moved beyond the limit of the visible spectrum. He thus established the existence of a form of radiant energy which is refracted by a prism, is less refrangible than red light, and to which the eye is insensitive."Ex private military library stock, so in better condition than most library books.
