In den WarenkorbHalf-Leather. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. 5th or later Edition. 1812 7th edition. 127pp. Good/None. Half tan leather with marbled boards, minor rubbing/bumping to edges/spine, minor scuffing/soiling, splitting to edges of spine, slight loss to spine head. Contents generally clean and tight but for minor spotting/browning, corner of one page missing, a few pencil notes in text. Owner's inscription crossed out to title page. A satirical work first issues in 1812 consisting of a series of 21 parodies mimicking the styles of popular poets of the time, including Lord Byron, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, Robert Southey, Walter Scott, William Thomas Fitzgerald, William Cobbett, Thomas Moore, Della Cruscan, Samuel Johnson, William Robert Spencer, Matthew Gregory Lewis, Thomas Busby, George Crabbe, August von Kotzebue, George Lillo and Theodore Hook, along with a genuine rejected address by Horace Smith and a parody of Shakespeare. The publication of the volume was in response to a public competition to find an address to be spoken at the reopening of the Drury Lane Theatre, previously destroyed by fire. None of the received entries were considered appropriate so, in the end, Lord Byron was commisioned to write a piece especially. When James & Horace Smith heard of the results of the competition, they produced this volume of parodies of writers of the day, published as supposed failed entries and issued to coincide with the reopening of the theatre. The book achieved popular success and led to a fashion for similar works. Nice early edition.

Hardcover. Zustand: VG+. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, patterned green cloth boards, blind stamped on front and rear plus gilt design on front and spine. Exterior shows very minor handling and corner bumps, spine is mildly toned and rear board has spotting near the upper left corner. The spotting is the only reason why this book is graded as VG+ and not near fine to find condition. Internal binding is good and text pages are tight. No signatures or bookplates found, no library markings. Tissue guard on the frontispiece is still present and fully attached. Pages are toned due to age and scattered foxing is present throughout.
