Reminiscences SIGNED on title page by Shepherd, his bookplate on front pastedown in A Brief Account of the History of Medicine, which is affectionally inscribed to him and SIGNED by doctor and author Herbert S. Birkett, errata slip tipped in, light foxing and damp staining to mid text-block, type-written foreword laid-in Memorial Lectures Series, a [4]pp invitation to the 1959 Shepherd Lecture, a [4]pp News Letter from the Women's Auxiliary of the Montreal General Hospital (Vol. 14, No. 7), and [10]pp pamphlet article, F.J. Shepherd As Anatomist by I. Maclaren Thompson (read before the Medical History Club, Winnipeg, 1937). Spine and edge wear, some rubbing on boards. A Brief Account of the History of Medicine is damp stained to the bottom half of the text block. A very good collection overall. Francis John Shepherd [1851-1929] and Herbert Birkett [1864-1942] were prominent medical men in Montreal. Shepherd In 1878 was appointed medical officer to the Montreal Dispensary, and in May of the following year was elected surgeon to out-patients at the Montreal General Hospital. In 1883 he exchanged this post for that of physician to the Charity and undertook the surgical work. He was also made temporary registrar of the Faculty of Medicine at McGill. He was greatly interested in the Montreal Maternity Hospital from 1886 until his death [Plarr's Lives of the Fellows, Royal College of Surgeons, London]. He was lifelong friend with Sir William Osler. In an article by Scott Belyea on a Century of Snatching: Grave Robbing in Kingston (in Ontario History: Volume 108, No. 1, 2016), he concludes that Montreal has garnered the most attention, with its rich socio- medical history and notorious Côtes des Neiges hilltop cemetery from which, according to Francis Shepherd (in his book Reminiscences), medical students and their exhumed "friends" often tobogganed down the winter slopes. Sylvio Leblond and D.G. Lawrence also cite many colourful Quebec examples of body snatching, collectively positioning Montreal as Canada's grave robbing capital." Similarly, Herbert Birkett rose from McGill to international success. His diligence and work ethic were instrumental in developing Otolaryngology departments at the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) and McGill University and his championing of the separation of Otolaryngology from Ophthalmology in 1905. Among his accomplishments, Berkett performed the first thyrotomy for malignant laryngeal diseases in Canada in 1893 and advocated for advanced radiology techniques. These three books showcase the development of medicine and medical research in Canada in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in Montreal and Quebec, establishing itself as a hub for health and medical sciences that continues to make insightful contributions today. The Abbot features a colour postcard tipped in to page 266; The Betrothed features the frontispiece and first two pages of the John S. Brown and Sons Canadian edition of the Holy Bible, folded in two and heavily discoloured and spotted, tipped in to the front of the work; Peveril of the Peak contains an advertisement for the Glasgow-based wholesale musicseller Frank Simpson to page 210. Externally, lovely condition with only minor bumping and rubbing. Light fading along some of the spines, especially to Castle Dangerous and The Bride of Lammermoor. A few marks can be seen across the collection, more prominent to the rear of Rob Roy. Peak and Peveril features slightly heavier loss of cloth along the rear joint, reinforced with tape. Internally, firmly bound. The frontispiece and title page of The Antiquary and Woodstock remain unopened, as does page 386 to The Antiquary. The present collection offers a window into the literary world of American poet and humorist Ogden Nash (19021971). It is comprised of 239 volumes published between 1886 and 1971, among which are numerous presentation and association copies. All books in the present collection come from the shared personal library of Ogden and Frances Nash. The collection spans poetry, humor, light verse, and literary criticism, and includes a significant number of first and limited editions, often in original bindings or dust jackets. Of particular note are six books inscribed by Nash to his wife, Frances (including five authored by Nash, one of which is in an "Author's Copy" half-leather binding). Included in the collection are 59 works by Nash, three of which feature edits to the text in Nash's hand. Twenty-seven of these Nash publications are Author's copies bound in half-leather. There are an additional 48 volumes bearing inscriptions to Nash from other authors and poets, most notably twelve volumes inscribed by S.J. Perelman.
