Its main subject is Grace, and he examines afresh the meaning and use of such terms as chesed in the Old Testament and charis in the New, not forgetting the Septuagint. But there are chapters also on doctrines closely related to Grace, under such titles as 'Trial, Temptation and Discipline,' 'Election,' and 'The Fellowship of God with Man in Christ.' In his chapters on 'Righteousness in Sinners' and 'Sin in Believers' he maintains that the full Christian doctrine is nowhere drawn out in the New Testament, but that it may be deduced from scattered references. In his discussion of 'Sin in Believers' he claims that Paul taught what some may consider a heresy, namely, that in what may be called 'conversion baptism' a believer was wholly cleansed from sin. In many ways this volume is complementary to Dr. Smith's last volume, The Bible Doctrine of Sin, and like all his work it is the fruit of sound knowledge, deep scholarship, and penetrating insight.

It seeks to show that a single doctrine gradually emerges, which can be best stated in psychological terms. The chief Old Testament contribution is found in the Prophets, the ritual system furnishing no more than a secondary source. Under the New Testament there is a detailed expository attempt to show that, while the experience of salvation from sin through the Death of Christ is the fundamental fact, the explanation of that experience, starting from a large and varied use of the Fifty-third of Isaiah, issues in what may be called a 'societary' doctrine of the Atonement. The author claims that Saint Paul, the Writer to the Hebrews, and the Writer of the Johannine Books, all hold this doctrine, though each states it in his own way.
