Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A stunning Cambridge dissertation on the sarcophagus from the Tomb of Alexander the Great written by Edward Daniel Clarke (1769-1822). Clarke was a British clergyman, naturalist, mineralogist, traveller and antiquarian. The place of the tomb remains still unknown. But Clarke`s investigation puts it in the mosque of St Athanasius in Alexandria. Because after the Napoleon`s defeat in 1801 in Egypt the antiquities collected by the French troops including the coffin were taken as trophies to the British Museum. Nowadays the coffin is enlisted in the BM inventory as a Nectanebo II (Nakhthorheb) sarcophagus which was reused as a ritual bath in the alexanrian mosque legendary connected to the mystical burial of Iskander. The dissertation includes depictions of the coffin, the mosque and architectural plans. 4 appendixes to the text are the publications of the antique sources. The aquatint engraving was made by Thomas Medland after William Alexander. Watermarks on the paper HATSON 1801. 160 p. Frontispiece (Alexander Ammon) illustration, 2 plates, 2 plans, 1 vignette (coins) 28,4 x 22 cm. Ex-owner inscription on the flyleaf by Edward Peacock at 1848.
