pp.xcvii, 904. 8vo. New hardback. RRP £90.00. Thomas Herbert (1606-82) set off for Persia in 1627. He returned to England three years later and his Travels first appeared in 1634. Later editions added Herbert s historical studies, combining erudition with the freshness of his youthful and pre-colonial travelogue. The 1677 edition is considered one of the best records of 17th century travel and it is presented here with explanatory notes and a historical introduction by John Butler.
