Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket. 4th Edition. SILURIA A HISTORY OF THE OLDEST ROCKS IN THE BRITISH ISLES BY SIR RODERICK IMPEY MURCHISON 1867 UNCUT. Here is another of the pioneering works of geology from the times of Darwin and his peers, titled: Siluria. A History of the Oldest Rocks in the British Isles and Other Countries; with sketches of the origin and distribution of native gold, the general succession of geological formations, and changes in the Earth s surface, by Sir Roderick Impey Murchison. This large and rather thick hard cover book (6 ¼ x 9 x 2 ¼ inches, 566 pages plus a section of 41 plates and their explanations, and finally, 32 pages of Mr. Murray s General List of Works) was published by John Murray of London dated 1867, and the Fourth Edition (so noted on the title page). There is a map contained in a pocket (probably never taken out) on the rear endpaper Geological Map of the Silurian Rocks . The book is bound in finely textured maroon boards with gilt decorations on the cover and gilt titles on the spine. The book is well illustrated although I am unable to tell you how many illustrations there are as the book is uncut, sometime both top and leading edge and thus I cannot open the pages. Condition: As doubtless you can imagine, because the book is entirely uncut, it is in very good, even near fine condition. The hard covers are clean and bright with just some light bumping to the corners and spine tips. The spine is faintly faded and there are some very minor smudges to the finish of the rear board. Inside, the book is unmarked except for the bookplate of the library of the noble family in Rome, Italy at whose estate sale I acquired in it in 1978. The interior pages are clean and without toning or foxing while the General List of the Publisher s works is toned as it seems to have been printed on a different quality of paper. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. Language: ENG.

In den WarenkorbHalf-Leather. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Published in London by John Murray in 1839 two volumes, here bound together in one, this is the First Edition of Murchison's landmark work in which he set up the Silurian System based on his studies of the rocks of Wales, Shropshire and the Welsh border counties of England, Murchison included both what were later to be classified as the Ordovician and Devonian periods within in his Silurian System, the work is well illustrated with hand coloured sections, folding and single page plates and a series of plates of the fossil fauna, all plates are present the book was sold on subscription with a list of subscribers at the front of the book, this copy was originally the property of David Davies of Froodvale in Llandovery, who was one of the original subscribers, his name appears in the list of subscribers immediately below Charles Darwin's, and as far as I am aware this is also the first time Darwin's name appeared in print. The rare three section linen backed map is present with this copy, housed in a nice clamshell box with an old original Victorian CDV photo of Murchison loosely inset into the inside cover, along with an original signature of Murchison's underneath. CONDITION both bindings are in very good condition. Internally foxing to the title page and plates, wear and foxing along top edge of one of the folding plates (pictured) and edge wear with small edge tears with no loss to the last of the folding sections, else the book is in very good general condition, the three section map was originally the property of Manchester Public Libraries with their withdrawn and sold stamps to the reverse of each section, also there are blind embossed stamps to every panel on the maps, but as can be seen in the photos these are not very noticeable, there are a few small splits in the maps along the fold lines and browning to the reverse, else the maps are in good general condition. A handsome example of the First Edition with the rare three section hand coloured map.

London: John Murray, 1839. with The Silurian Region and Adjacent Counties of England & Wales Geologically Illustrated. London: J. Gardner, [1839]. Engraved map in 3 large sections with linen backing. FIRST EDITION, 3 volumes, large 4to (260 x 330mm), half calf, map in slip-case. with 56 plates, views and maps, including 12 hand-coloured geological profiles, numerous text illustrations. With the Rare and Important Hand-Coloured Geological Map on Three Sheets. "THE GREATEST WORK EVER TO BE PUBLISHED EMBODYING THE RESULTS OF A SINGLE PIECE OF RESEARCH BY ONE MAN. This work detailed and established practically the whole succession of the stratigraphical formations and their fossil contents (and associated igneous rocks) of what we now know as the Ordovician and Silurian systems, in their type areas" (Challinor 141). Sir Roderick Impey Murchison, born in Tarradale, Ross-shire, Scotland is the geologist who first established the geologic sequence of Early Paleozoic strata (the Paleozoic Era began 542 million years ago and ended about 251 million years ago) In 1831 he was elected president of the Geological Society, after serving as secretary for five years. In that same year he began his studies of the Early Paleozoic rocks in South Wales. His findings were embodied in the monumental work The Silurian System (1839). Following the establishment of the Silurian System, Murchison and Sedgwick founded the Devonian System, based on their research of the geology of southwestern England and the Rhineland. Murchison then went on an expedition to Russia and wrote, with others, The Geology of Russia in Europe and the Ural Mountains (1845). In 1841 he proposed the establishment of the Permian System (strata 299 million to 251 million years old), based upon his Russian explorations. Murchison was knighted in 1846, and in 1855 he was appointed director general of the Geological Survey of Great Britain and director of the Royal School of Mines and the Museum of Practical Geology, London. He prepared successive editions of his work Siluria (1854; 5th ed. 1872), which presented the main features of the original Silurian System together with information on new findings. In addition, he fought unsuccessfully against the splitting of his original Silurian System into three parts: the Cambrian Period (about 542 million to 488 million years ago), the Ordovician Period (about 488 million to 444 million years ago), and the Silurian Period (about 444 million to 416 million years ago). In 1871 he founded a chair of geology and mineralogy at the University of Edinburgh, and in his will he provided for the establishment of the Murchison Medal and Geological Fund, to be awarded annually by the Geological Society.
