These particular volumes span modern English history, from 1558-1945. Watson is a 1985 reprint. Black, Clark, Davies, Williams and Woodward are 1985 reprints of the second edition. However, the series was later expanded to the end of the Second World War, leading to a further volume by Taylor and updated editions. Despite all writing the same series, each historian brought their own rigorous scholarship to their volumes. This included a debate on what constituted 'English History', whether to involve other nations in the United Kingdom or not.
