Bensley, London - 1805 new edition - 284p, 18cmx15cm - with engraved frontispiece and plates - Vol II - condition: good, with leather boards and spine, with rubbing and wear, engraved plates and frontispiece, The letters of "Junius," originally appearing in the "Public Advertiser" from November of 1768 to January of 1772, represent one of the great mysteries of English literature. No author ever claimed credit for these letters, though they were ascribed to every prominent Whig of the period. Sir Philip Francis (1740-1818), who was a clerk in the War Office when the "Junius" letters were written, is generally considered to be the mystery writer, though he denied this association to the end of his life.

A fine original colour lithograph from Vanity Fair, a magazine which was published from 1869-1914, featuring a large caricature portrait each week. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". "Junius' poured brilliantly slanderous invective upon Tory-minded English ministers, especially the Duke of Grafton, for a series of inconsistent measures which allegedly ruined England and drove the colonies 'into excesses little short of rebellion.' Vehement, lucid, frequently reprinted in English and colonial newspapers, the letters were polemical masterpieces with such extraordinary knowledge and appreciation of contemporary colonial opinion that they lent moral support to the early revolutionary cause. 'Junius' opposed the Tea Duty, but upheld the legality of the Stamp Act, and prophesied (Dec. 19, 1769) that the colonies aimed at independence" - Dictionary of American History. . Begins: 'There will be no Ladies on the 13th. Inst & the card I will send you will be personal. I am sorry, that this rule exists, but it affects my own family as well as all the Gentler Sex.' He concludes with brief details of the plans for the evening. In a postscript which he has initalled he asks Dallas to 'do some more translation from German'. If Dallas agrees, Cunliffe-Owen will 'ask Dr Bredermann to call upon you or I send it to you Tomorrow. It is most ugently wanted / PCO.'.
