Decorative pastedowns, endpaper and page edges. Black and white frontispiece. Illustrated with an additional 9 black and white plates. Previous owner's bookplate pasted onto front pastedown. Area of loss 2 cm by 4 cm to foot of spine. Title plate missing. Boards rubbed. Corner of fore edges of boards rubbed and lightly rubbed. Upper board and front endpaper loose. First 10 or so pages lightly tanned and lightly foxed. Frontispiece, tissue guard and title page would appear to be water stained. Overall, the book is in a poor condition (yet there are no missing pages).

1st. Ed. 8vo. x + 301pp. B/w ills., some with tissue guards, occasional pencil annotations. Rebound but with as much as possible of the original red cloth, with marbled end papers, bumped boards, grubby, with name written in pen across the front, gold text. US$22.

Contains [xlvii] 212 printed pages of text with 7 monochrome illustrations. First 1902 edition with 42 page introduction by Sir Herbert Maxwell.
