Spine is faded several tones lighter than the boards, which are themselves more faded at the edges than the middle. Binding tight and clean. Title page dated 1908. 166 pages. Illustrated with 95 illustrations. Curiously, there are only three mentions of the Wright brothers (including one photograph). Charts and diagrams and explanations of the aeronautical principles and physics, in addition to discussion of pioneers in the field. Interior clean. Please email with questions or to request photos. If there is a photo beside this listing, please note that it was placed there by ABE without our permission and is likely what they call a 'stock photo' (whatever that is). This volume is part of a large collection of Aviation and Ballooning books, a catalogue of which is available upon request. Most of the volumes have a small pencil notation on the first blank page - the letters KB and a number. Many have Evelyn Kendall's signature as well.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. pp. xv, 166. 95 text illus. (some full-page). cloth (spine faded, covers spotted, institutional rubberstamp on title). First Edition of this interesting work by the American-born mechanical engineer and inventor. Maxim invented the Maxim gun, the first portable fully automatic machine gun, a curling iron, a pocket menthol inhaler and larger steam inhaler, aircraft artillery, and various other devices. He also claimed to have invented the electric light bulb, becoming involved in several lengthy patent disputes with Thomas Edison. He also experimented with flying machines and was the originator in 1904 of an immensely popular amusement park ride that is still in use today (The 'Captive Flying Machine'). "A gifted and versatile inventor, Maxim received 122 United States patents and 149 British patents. He devoted much time and money near the turn of the century to aeronautical experiments. An airship he built in 1894 to study the lift and thrust of various wing shapes and propellers actually rose from the ground, but he had not developed methods for controlling his machine in the air and did not achieve manned flight. He had, however, using an incredibly heavy, steam-propelled machine, proved that mechanical flight in heavier-than-air machines was possible." (encyclopedia) The present work contains chapters on air currents and the flight of birds, flying of kites, screws, experiments with apparatus attached to a rotating arm Crystal Palace experiments, hints as to the building of flying machines steering by means of a gyroscope, the shape and efficiency of aeroplanes - the action of aeroplanes and the power required expressed in the simplest terms some recent machines.

First Edition/First Printing. Bound in illustrated blue cloth boards with titles present to the spine and Zeppelin illustation on the front board. A fascinating look at the quick development of aeronautics at the turn of the twentieth century. This work discusses the possible use of aeroplanes and other flying machines in warfare. Manned kits and hot air balloons had been used in a limited fashion previously for military purposes, but mostly for reconnaissance. Zeppelins or dirigibles were first developed in the 1890's. The Wright Brothers first powered aeroplane successfully flew in 1903. Only six years later this book was published on the use of aircraft for purposes of war. It did end up becoming a reality only a few years later though; first in 1911 in the Italo-Turkish War with Italian Army, then just a little later in World War I. This was the first work on aerial warfare to be published for the public, other works before this having been limited to the military. Written by R. P. Hearne, who also wrote 'Zeppelins and Super-Zeppelins', and was a motoring journalist. With an introduction by Hiram Maxim, an inventor who is best known for his creation of the first portable automatic machine gun. Hearne put out a second expanded edition of this book in 1910 titled "Airships in Peace and War," but his first edition is much more difficult to find. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
