Hardcover. Zustand: New. Sikkim is an enigma for most, its history and its 1975 merger with India shrouded in mystery. This book fills the lacunae on both fronts, combining insights into the erstwhile royal kingdom's unique history with the intriguing story of how it became India's twenty-second state. It examines the often-fraught relationship between its original inhabitants, the Lepchas, and the Bhutias (people of Tibetan origin) who established institutions of religion and governance Lamaist Buddhism and the Namgyal dynasty respectively. Aspects of the Indian relationship with Tibet form part of this narrative, in particular due to the British involvement in the Himalayan region as a consequence of the 'Great Game' and great power rivalry with the Russian empire. For India today, Sikkim remains significant from a strategic point of view, given its proximity to the border with Tibet, now China, and the presence of the vital Siliguri Corridor that connects India's northeast with the rest of the country.

Paperback. Zustand: As New. New. Contents Preface. Acknowledgements. Abbreviations. 1. Introduction. 2. History. 3. The virus. 4. Epizootiology. 5. Bluetongue and wildlife. 6. Vector. 7. Clinical disease. 8. Pathogenesis and pathology. 9. Impact of bluetongue on animal reproduction. 10. Immune response. 11. Diagnostics. 12. Vaccines. 13. Control strategies. 14. Subject index. From the Preface Bluetongue initially recognised in South Africa in late 1870s in sheep is now known to affect a wide variety of other domestic and wild ruminants as well. Recent reports also suggested that camelids may also be affected with bluetongue virus in certain situations. Though it was recognised more than a century ago it continues to be an economically very important livestock disease throughout the world. Since bluetongue is transmitted by Culicoides midges its geographical distribution is dependent on the presence of the competent insect vector and susceptible vertebrate host. Thus occurrence of bluetongue virus infection in different parts of the world is governed by several ecological and environmental factors. There has been unprecedented progress with greater impact offering clearer insight into knowledge about bluetongue virus in the past 20 years than there had been in the entire 40 years since bluetongue made its way to the OIE List A disease. During this period the discipline of molecular biology has profoundly influenced virtually every facet of arbovirology. The progress has been astounding and success phenomenal. The developments in molecular and immunological technologies have given a great insight into the virus biology genetic and antigenic diversity host immune response vector biology and vaccines. Enormous literature has accumulated due to extensive studies conducted on various basic and applied aspects of this important animal disease. However there have been very limited efforts to compile the new research findings in comprehensive and understandable manner in the form of a book. 162 pp.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. It is evident that livestock diseases play both direct as well as indirect impact on animal and human health, as it not only affects the livelihood of farmers but also induces catastrophic effects on their income. Moreover, the indirect consequences of such diseases on human health are a major concern as more than two third of emerging infectious diseases in humans are zoonotic in nature and involve transmission of disease from an animal to a human host. One of the most notable zoonotic infections is leptospirosis, which is commonly known as Weil's disease, field fever, mud fever, etc. The lack of knowledge on this disease globally is a major problem. Thus, an effort to reconstitute the current knowledge on it is need of the hour. It is caused by a spirochete Leptospira and is a reemerging, zoonotic and waterborne disease worldwide. Due to negligence, rapid and unplanned urbanization, poor sanitation conditions in most of the developing countries and lack of assessment of current epidemiologic situation, leptospirosis has emerged as a leading cause of severe illness. This monograph discusses the leptospirosis from all angles pertaining to its risk factors, causative agent, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations and diagnostic techniques with few illustrations from our lab. We hope that this monograph will enrich knowledge of the researchers and students in the field of leptospirosis.

Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Contents: Preface. 1. Introduction to history of China. 2. History of the song dynasty. 3. Five dynasties and ten kingdoms period. 4. Culture of China. 5. Economic history of China. 6. History of Japan. 7. Anglo-Japanese alliance. 8. Economy of Japan. 9. Culture of Japan. 10. Japanese war crimes. 11. Japanese people. Index. Traditional Chinese culture covers large geographical territories with each region is usually divided into distinct sub-cultures. Until 1700 China's material culture had been unrivalled, its standard of living was among the best in the world, and inventions flowed more commonly from east to west than vice versa. The song dynasty was a culturally rich period for philosophy and the arts. Various dynasties also expanded into peripheral territories like inner Mongolia, Manchuria, Xinjiang, and Tibet. China was for a large part of the last two millennia the world's largest economy. For centuries, religious and social advancement in China could be achieved through high performance on the imperial examinations. Chinese philosophers, writers and poets were highly respected and played key roles in preserving and promoting the culture of the empire. Japanese history begins in approximately A.D. 400, when the Yamato clan, eventually based in Kyoto, managed to gain control of other family groups in central and western Japan. Contact with Korea introduced Buddhism to Japan at about this time. Through the 700s Japan was much influenced by China, and the Yamato clan set up an imperial court similar to that of China. Japan quickly made the transition from a medieval to a modern power. During the Meiji period from 1868, Japan expanded economically with the embrace of the market economy. Many of today's enterprise were founded at the time, and Japan emerged as the most developed national in Asia. The culture of Japan has evolved greatly over millennia, from the country's prehistoric Jomon culture to its contemporary hybrid culture, which combines influences from Asia, Europe and North America.
