As early as 1470 AD, Manipur had political connectivity with Myanmar following the signing of the treaty between the King Khekhomba of Pong of Upper Myanmar and King Kyamba (1467-1523) of Manipur. As far as historical records are concerned, it was during the reign of King Kyamba that the King of Pong gifted the idol of Vishnu (see cover picture) and some ritual item to Kyamba. Even then, comprehensive and thorough academic intervention to exhaustively study in-depth the shared culturo-historical experiences of the peoples of North East India with those of South East Asia remain negligible and wanting. With India's Look East Policy initiated in 1991, and more so the Act East Policy launched in 2014 gaining prominence, there have been growing attention among the policy makers, academicians, and experts etc. to engage in relooking the connectivity of the region of Northeast India with the East. However, their attention is overwhelmingly on economy concerns and trade prospects. This book is a modest attempt towards filling up that void with special reference to Myanmar and Manipur though not limited to it.

The interwoven history of these two erstwhile nations for over two thousand years sharing the joys and sorrows as good neighbours enabled India to easily establish cordial relationship with Myanmar so swiftly. Of late, the various activities of exchanging of ideas and experiences have taken place which brings the people from both sides of the border closer to each other thereby playing a key role in Manipur-Myanmar Relations in particular and India-Myanmar Relations in general. No doubt, at some stages of history, there had been a story of struggle for supremacy between Manipur and Burma. In the fluctuating fortune between the two sides, the Burmese had shown the might of the famed Manipuri Cavalry who forced the Burmese to retreat. When the Burmese took their reprisals and occupied Manipur, they returned home with members of these famed horsemen and they formed the advance thrust when King Alungpaya attacked Thailand in Chiangmai. The British, eager to save their interest from growing French influence in the Bay of Bengal, saw an ally in Manipur. Thus was born the Manipur Levy under charge of Maharaja Gambhir Singh, which drove the Burmese away. The Manipuris, who were already inhabited there and those taken as war captives to meet the Burmese requirements of skilled artisans, soldiers and scholars settled down in and around Mandalay and became part of the mosaic of Burmese people, treated as one and equal. Even then there are still considerable number of people who still harbour the perceived past wounds of seven years devastation (1819-1826).This present volume is in a way an intervention to do away with such mind-sets in the light of emerging realities and finding ways of benefiting together.

When the sounds of air raids and bombing by Japanese airplanes were heard for the first time at Imphal on 10th May, 1942, it was alarmingly clear that Manipur was going to be one of the important theatre of World War II as Imphal holds key to both the opposing fronts in their future scheme. Manipur's strategic importance and the necessity to control or defend it were, in fact, going to determine the course of the War. Both the Japanese and more so to the Azad Hind Fauz of Subhas Chandra Bose Imphal hold the key to their victory. For Subhas Bose, if Imphal was liberated, his dream of liberating India is almost a certainty, and for the Japanese, it heralds the demise of British colonial rule in Asia. Manipuri thus became one of the bloodiest and toughest battles of the Second World War in history. The natives of Manipur and Naga Hills lived through and experienced the battles, which could be epic in the sense of the violence, loss of lives, and displacement that the War had brought in. This book, which altogether compilation of 33 chapters is a humble effort to reconstruct the life of Manipur during the Second World War and how natives responded to it along with the experiences of individuals who worked or volunteered for Indian National Army (INA) with the hope that in doing so, they got inspired by an idea called Azadi or freedom; freedom from foreign rule and domination by outsiders of their land.
