Original promotional label 41x41mm, English text in green and gold with palm tree motif. (2) "Mecca (Makkah) Inter-Continental Hotel, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia". Original luggage label 114x148mm with rounded corners, English and Arabic text, in cream and brown with gilt palm tree motif and lettering. Undated c1975. Both fine and unused with original backings in place. InterContinental opened its first hotel in Saudi Arabia in Riyadh in May 1975, with Mecca following soon after in August. The 215 room Mecca hotel was located on the main highway four miles from the centre. It was designed by Rolf Gutbrod, with IHG's Graphic and Interior Design VP Neil Prince leading on the interiors. Prince credits his staff Charles R. Alvey and Richard Simpson with the label graphics, noting that they were copied by competitors.
