In den Warenkorbbrosch. Zustand: Sehr gut. 181 Seiten. Sehr gutes Exemplar mit geringfügigen Gebrauchsspuren. - ART'S FACULTY TO PRESENT specific occurrences and to convey interpretations of historical and mythological events was developed in antiquity and became, during the Middle Ages, the principal justification for im- agery. Modern scholars and critics, however, have been perplexed by the notion that pictures can func- tion in the same way as narrative texts. How, they ask, can a spatial art unfold in time? Is there a narrator in painting and sculpture? In any case, what relationship does pictorial narrative have to literature? The nine scholars who gathered in Baltimore in March 1984 shared an interest in storytelling pictures but no one point of view. They included students of an enor- mous range of material extending from Japan to Babylonia to France and across four millennia. In turn, they faced an even more diverse audience comprising, among others, art historians of all periods and literary scholars, historians, and philosophers. The speakers were given one instruction: to set aside the question of textual sources and to focus instead on the visual aspects of pictorial narrative. The organizers of the symposium believed that the fundamental issue of the dependence of pictures on narrative texts had already been well treated in various publications and had been the subject of other symposia, most notably the session on "Narration in Ancient Art" at the 1955 meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America and the 1982 colloquium on "Texte et image" at Chantilly.
